The Wii Virtual Console will be expanding again later this year, this time with the addition of classic titles taken from the library of the best-selling computer of all time, the Commodore 64 [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commodore_64#_note-1].

Wii Shop Channel [http://www.mobygames.com/game/c64/international-karate], and will be available for 500 Wii Points each.

"The massive impact the Commodore 64 had on videogaming is still evident today with many gamers remembering the computer and its games with great fondness," said Commodore Gaming [http://www.commodoregaming.com/]CEO Bala Keilman. "By working with Nintendo of Europe, we are ensuring that future generations of gamers can play some of the best and most popular titles that kick-started the computer games revolution and so keep the C64 legacy in gamers hearts."

Laurent Fischer of Nintendo Europe [http://www.nintendo.be/]added, "We are extremely pleased to be working with Commodore gaming to provide even more retro hits for Wii owners to choose from on Virtual Console. We hope that this great choice of games will bring nostalgia to our gaming fans, while an entirely new generation of video game players can experience a host of classic games for the very first time."

Released in 1982, the Commodore 64 sold roughly 30 million units prior to its discontinuation in 1993. Its advanced graphics and sound technology made it a breakthrough gaming system, and over 4000 titles were released for the system during its lifetime.

... thank you, emulator.

I wonder how this catalogue will appeal to a wide audience which is relatively fresh to video "gaming"...

It annoys me you have to pay for replaying old games, though.
They cost next to nothing to Nintendo to "produce", so they should cost next to nothing. (not that I know what 500 Wii points means...)

500 Wii points = 5 USD [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wii_Points].

You can find correct PC joypads at 15.8 dollars.
If there's no upgrade on the graphics, it will just be Nintendo being Nintendo: raping fans' wallets, who ask for more.

For those who didn't own a C64 like myself its a welcome thing, for those who did its not. Simple as that really. I reckon Uridium alone will be worth the 500.

They may cost nothing to produce, but there is this little thing called copyright. Of which the owners (you know, the ones who actually pay for the games to be made?) deserve to get paid for in order to encourage them to continue doing same.
Yes, well, the guys behind those games may likely not be in the game industry anymore. I don't think this will encourage them at all. Not that miserable income.
Some eggheads are already saying that XBLA games aren't expensive enough to sustain and encourage indie dev, and most of them are already found at either 10 or 15 dollars.
