People very often make the mistake of hating soldiers who are sent to places, when the orders originate from career politicians who have never even held a weapon making the calls. "Old men start wars but it is the young that have to fight and die" and all that. This spotlight is a grand example of how regular people, gamers at that, exist in the soldiering business. People who have chosen the career of soldiering can't just "quit" without consequences if orders for being shipped out come in. Luckily I haven't read anything horribly clichéd anti-military in this thread yet. But just as a word of warning to people who might want to post; as the old saying goes:
Don't hate the player - hate the game.
With that said, an excellent spotlight for a good man. Family men still going out and doing the good work is very admirable. I'm a lowly 21 myself and don't have a relationship going, or any interest in starting one. All I've wanted since my teenage years is to serve in the military, but with the financial situation the Finnish Defence Forces are cutting back very heavily in the coming couple of years, so getting my contract renewed is gonna be a pain.
Maybe my next application for international ops will go through. Who knows, might bump into you if you visit Mazar-i-Sharif in the next year! Good luck out there, and don't get shot. +2000 US servicemen down is enough, that number doesn't have to rise any higher.
Please? Also I'd love a "Wish you were here" card if you got any. Okay now I'm just joking.
Signed, a lowly Sergeant of the FDF.
