I had a recent encounter of a Bleach/Frag addict at a gaming party where Smash Brawl and I was beating everyone to a pulp and he asks "You play Brawl Competitively? If so I'll have to smack you."

Which I in turn asked him what made a game Competitive and he replied with some bs that it's not a fighting game but I have a feeling one of you guys on here does have my answer.

What makes a game competitive?

when two or more people compete for a certain objective, with the goal of winning, exclusive of each other, that is with relative gains rather than absolute gains.

That right there. OP: Perhaps you need to refine your question more if you wanted something different.

Any game with another person. You always feel the need to be better than the other person. That's basic human behavior, perfectly realised through the world of gaming.

Otherwise competitively could mean that you play as stated by sneaklemming + It's in some sort of leage or sponsored tournaments or something.
So it's not "just" casual player vs player, but competitive player vs player if that makes any sense.

I'm pretty sure this friend of yours meant "competitively" in the tournament sense of the term. Given his reaction, I'd say he's had some contact with the competitive smash community. They aren't exactly the friendliest lot, and to someone who plays Smash purely for fun, they tend to take things far too seriously.

Without competition we wouldn't be here today...the competition ladies and gentlemen is to survive. (enter the twilight zone music)

You should write a dictionary mate, that was good!

It isn't a fighting game.
It's a beat-em-up in every way.
But it's a beat-em-up that can be played competitively and be enjoyed by many.
A game doesn't need to be a specific genre to be played against each other.

He probably meant to ask if you were Major League in Brawl, competed in tournaments and whatnot. (I actually know people who do.)

In my AP English Literature class last year, my friend said that competition was childish, which was sort of confusing because I was under the impression competition was a major part of human culture.

Also the look on my ex-girlfriend's face when my friend said this was priceless.

I find Brawl is only good for a party game. The random tripping and lesser gameplay doesn't make it a great game to compete in.
