Computer boots and image displays before immediately stopping,

I am currently taking apart and rebuilding an old computer so I can learn more about how to build PCs. However, after dismantling and remantling my PC I have come across this issue:
The Computer boots and runs, but the monitor only displays for a few seconds before stopping.
The computer still runs, but there is no display.
The monitor works fine, I have checked it on another computer and the same problem occurs using a different monitor.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Well, that is weird. Check if the video card is fitted propely (just push it in a bit) and also check if the screen is connected well, too. Fastening the screws at the end of the cable is a good idea. I can't think of anything else at the moment.

How many seconds? How far does it get in the boot process before it cuts out? Regardless, just try reseating the video card and RAM.

Does the PC speaker make any beeps?
I had similar issues and they were related to RAM, do as Snowy says and try reseating the dimms.

I have reseated the video card and RAM and now the computer powers on but there is no display at all. Any ideas?
Thanks

Check that all the power leads are firmly in place, including the graphics card if there is one. Check to see if the CMOS battery is in place. To be honest, the normal suspects is the ram or the video card not being seated correctly. Try reseating the graphics card again and then pull all the ram modules out and putting them in on at time. You could try marrying Elizabeth Bennett and using her dowry to buy a new one

Do you have an IGP (integrated graphics processor)? Try plugging your monitor connection into it, if so. If you get an image on screen, your GPU is to blame. It may have been damaged or fried from static when you were touching it.

Yeah try this. Though keep in mind with older PCs the IGP is usually disabled when a dedicated GPU is installed so if you have onboard graphics take out your graphics card and then try the IGP output.
