Conan O'Brien Reveals Batman TV Series Coming To DVD This Year

The great Batman television series from the 1960s is finally coming to DVD.

For those of us of a certain age, Batman is less "brooding Dark Knight" and more "BIFF! BAM! KAPOW!" For a brief period in the 1960s, Adam West and Burt Ward brought unparalleled excitement to television sets as the crimefighting duo Batman and Robin. There was even a feature film in 1966 - the one true Bat-movie! Alas, by the summer of '68 it was all over and while Batman lived on in reruns, it was always hit-or-miss and you could never count on continuity - which, believe it or not, was actually a consideration for much of the series.

But according to no less an authority than Conan O'Brien, that situation is about to change dramatically. "Very excited @WBHomeEnt is releasing the Batman '66 Complete TV Series in 2014!" he tweeted earlier today. And while he cited no official sources for his announcement, it was retweeted by the official Warner Bros. Twitter account, which also noted [https://twitter.com/WBHomeEnt/status/423574609074466816] how unusual it is that nobody's ever seen O'Brien and Batman together in the same room.

I liked Christian Bale's Batman (and Michael Keaton was very solid too) and the flurry of Marvel superhero movies over the past few years have done a nice job of capturing the comic book ambiance, but for my money this is where the real action is. Batpoles! Bat Shark Repellent! The Batusi! And if the the Batman movie is included with the package, it'll be my money, alright - thrown in great fistfuls at the Bat-screen. POWIE!

Huh...... Somehow I just kinda assumed that the '66 Batman series ALREADY was out and available in its entirely on DVD, I mean they put out the 90's TV show on DVD 5 years ago.

Maybe this is the "Super Special Awesome Collector's Editon" version...

OT: That's cool and all... Can't wait to own it... But, I was hoping for more of a Blu-Ray/DVD combo pack or something... (I want my HD Adam West Batman, dammit!!)

Actually, the 66 show never went to DVD. Due to lots of copyright shenanigans the only way to watch it was on syndicated television or online. This is a big deal!

I do love this show. As far as I know, it's the only genuine, unironically "comedy" Batman - the original comics were always more detective noir than cartoon strip - and the '66 film in particular is one of the most hilarious things to come out of the decade. I wonder if this DVD release will coincide with some kind of trade release of the ongoing Batman 60s comic?

Hot damn! We're getting the release of the 1966 Batman series at last! I'm hoping DC Comics, Warner Brothers, and 20th Century Fox (assuming they're still tied to this show) will go all out with this. I'm talking tons of features, from a historical recounting on what led this show to be made, to behind the scenes photos rarely seen in the public, to even that rarely seen short that introduces Batgirl before she came on the show (and it introduced an even more ridiculous looking Killer Moth). This is not the time to half-ass it, people.

It probably won't be; it was produced separately from the television series. However, it's available right now to rent through NetFlix or you can buy the DVD on Amazon for $7.50.

For those who have NetFlix streaming, the first few seasons of the excellent Batman: The Brave and the Bold are available; the portrayal of Batman in that series definitely owes a great deal to the '60s interpretation of the character. You can also buy or rent episodes through Amazon, but they're not free viewing for Prime members.

There's a lot of weird holes in DVD availability, largely because of rights issues. Still, I was in the same boat as you: I thought it had been released. Then again, I never put much thought towards it.

Riddle me this; whose red and blue and jumping up and down in happiness? This Bat-fan right here! Seriously, I've been waiting for a full series home release ever since I first saw the show on TV Land so many years ago. I love all incarnations of the Caped Crusader, so the day I can finally add the Adam West camp fest chapter to my Bat collection will be a fulfilling one indeed.

The series is goofy and cheesy, yes, but it's not entirely out of line. It's easy to forget that through the 50s and 60s Batman wasn't the tortured, hard-bitten character we've come to see him as today. His parents were murdered and that's pretty shitty, but all in all being Batman seemed pretty goddamn awesome. He even had a little magical buddy from another dimension!

That's the Batman I know and love.

Me too :D I have the Adam West's Batman Movie on DVD but definitely looking forward to the day the whole serie was avaible, Cesar Romero as The Joker and his refuse to shave his moustache was super kitsch, surreal and genius at the same time :p darn, the whole villians cast was great ^_^
