Could Bungie's New IP Be an Action RPG?

God I am sick to death of branching non-linear storylines. They're impossible to immerse yourself into compared to the way a conventional, well-developed linear story can take you in. At every turn, as a seasoned gamer you think to yourself not "What would I do?" but rather "Which option gives me the most benefits?" Good/Evil choices are stale and morally ambiguous choices are just boring. I want to be swept away by the tides of destiny! Give me more great games with linear storylines.
QFT buddy. If, as a developer, you don't want to bother with a strong main story, make a sandbox. But bloody hell, if you're going to make a linear game, play to the strengths linearity brings! Make it immersive, action packed, and most importantly, create a story which actually greatly drives the action! The player should look forward to both the next action sequence AND the next plot twist. The story, dialogue and cutscenes should not be something that people skip through to get to the next big explosion.

bla bla bla there's no story bla bla bla it's a generic game

if you have such better tastes in gaming than don't y'all ever you know...play games? haha =P I'm just poking (kinda tired, played THE Beta for a while and decided to pop on here for a sec)

but really, Bungie's now ready to do anything they want sooo FPS or not or more, we'll just have to see

an action rpg does sound quite wonderful tho =]

maybe by the time it comes out, I'll have managed to finish (or not) Mass Effect 1 and possibly try out 2 lol

I bet the Crysis 2 writer is happy
Crysis 2 writer says that the new Bungie IP is a cheap rip off of something?

OT: Action RPGs are getting to be where the money is, so it would make sense that that would be where Bungie's heading.

Crysis 2 writer dislikes Bungie's new IP before it has even been released? I don't like that man. Time to start hating Crysis 2's originality

I stongly agree. Player-defined stories are awful in practice. They create too many contradictions and a strong incentive to plan the story in advance, which is just as awful as it sounds. I could go on and on, but suffice it to say that good writing is wasted on branching storylines.

Replayability comes from finding different ways to play the game. Most RPGs do a good job of this, but not Bioware oddly enough.

Hmmmm. Would be nice. I love to LAN Halo, I'll admit it excels. But I only played a few hours of the campaign, during which I learnt almost nothing, decided I annoyed myself, and shot every soldier on my team... If they could create a compelling story and keep good gameplay I'm all over it.

Never seen so much love for Deus Ex as in this thread. This thread gains +15 to awesomeness.

I know it won't be set in the Halo universe, but I WANT A HALO RPG!
I'd love to be a little grunt running around in a huge open world.
I love grunts.

I think it's because it was linear enough to have a cohesive story, yet there was variety in the story based on the players actions.

I bet right now, somebody is reinstalling it.

I'm surprised this is just now being talked about. That job has been posted for several months now. I want to apply, it's just finding a good 1,000 word writing sample that's stopping me. I think my writing's excellent, it's just finding pieces of it that can stand on their own where I don't have explain everything in it. Still, a little worried that The Escapist did a piece on this. Now more people will know about it.

I am still hoping that they're going back to the Myth universe. Anyone here remember those games? Pure RTS. No reasource gathering or building. Best RTS I've ever played.
Write something FOR the job, that way you can show them you can specialised the piece around what they want.

I knew this ages ago as well, I think the only people to want a job at Bungie is hardcore fans, and game designers, and I doubt we have too many of the second kind, and the first kind probably knew anyway.

"more story rich than Halo"?
That's not exactly setting the bar very high, is it?
There are ROCKS with more interesting stories than the Halo series.
I can already predict the title of this RPG: "Halo Quest". or possibly, "The Halo Scrolls: OST".

Unfortunately, I don't think Bungie has control over the Myth IP anymore. Very sad, as I loved that series as well (the first two games anyway, never played the third one). However, it would still be interesting to see them return to the real-time tactics genre again with a new IP.
