Crazy iOS Game dream:scape Looks Positively Unreal

Developers could use the Unreal Engine to make hardcore action titles for iPad and iPhone, or they could use it to take a trippy journey through the memories of a coma patient.

Even though Epic's Infinity Blade won't be coming to my Android devices [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/109034-Epic-Says-Infinity-Blade-Wont-Be-Coming-to-Android], it was still a great game - but that's just the tip of what the iOS version of Unreal Engine can do.

What you see here to the right is the first-look trailer for dream:scape, an indie iPad/iPhone game from Speedbump Studios [http://www.speedbumpstudios.com/]. Or rather, calling it a "game" might not be accurate - while it looks like it has some things in common with classic adventure games like Monkey Island, its creator refers to it as an "interactive experience, controlled by the user."

The player's character has awoken from a coma only to find that he (or she?) has lost his memories, and the player must navigate through and explore a surreal dream landscape to put things back together again.

While this is definitely on the "artsy" side of things, it's also strangely striking - and an excellent trailer that does a very good job of selling the slightly-off atmosphere. Frankly, I'm intrigued, and I don't even own an iPad or iPhone.

There's no release date yet, but it seems fairly far along - long enough for it to have a "final app size" of 200MB, anyway. Keep an eye on this one, because it looks rather unique, and gaming could always use more of that.

If this tries to be anything like "Dinner Date", I ain't buying... Actually, I won't be buying, anyway- seeing as I don't own an iPhone/iPad.

Huh.

Coo.

I won't be getting it since I lack the necessary platform, but it does look somewhat interesting. I mean, how many other games deliver the tutorial through the medium of talking scarecrow?

Just think, this a game for a mobile phone. Who would have dreamed of this 5 years ago? Even 2 years ago?

I bet they would have dreamed of it. Unfortunately they didn't nearly make it.

It's too early to say such things, but I feel like we're bound for more innovation and originality with iOS than on any of the traditional gaming platforms. I think it has a lot to do with touch screens being god-awful for all of the fast-paced action mechanics that comprise the predictable, tiresome core of modern gaming. iOS devs are focusing on non-combat gameplay out of necessity, and it looks like creativity might be one of the unintended byproducts.

This is the best kind of use for the Unreal Engine I can see. Slow paced, not requiring reflex control system and something more akin of an imersive book.

Looks great for a game on a phone, but the lack of buttons will always keep it from it's true potential.
