Cryptic: Explorable Star Trek Online Ships is "Something We Want"

Cryptic Studios says it eventually wants to let players explore the one big part of Star Trek Online [http://www.startrekonline.com/] where they currently can't boldly go at all: Their own starships.

Remember that TOS episode when Lt. Riley got all hopped up on astro-goofballs, put the Enterprise in peril by shutting down its engines and then drove everybody nuts by belting out off-key renditions of "I'll Take You Home Again, Kathleen?" That's the kind of problem that has only one solution: Go down to Engineering, bust open the door and punch somebody in the mouth. But while that might have worked for Kirk, it won't work for you, for one simple reason: You can't go down to Engineering, or anywhere else in your Star Trek Online starship, for that matter. Not yet, anyway.

"Anything we can do to make the game feel even more like Star Trek is something we want to do. So, definitely, we want to give people more of their ship," STO Executive Producer Craig Zinkievich told IncGamers [http://www.incgamers.com/News/21011/cryptic-wants-to-open-up-star-trek-online-ships]. "This is one of those things we want to get perfect before introducing it to players, though. It's going to be an undertaking."

It's unlikely that a full-scale mockup of the Enterprise is on anyone's drawing board at this point but even just the ability to move between the major stations on a ship - Engineering, Medical, perhaps even the thrice-damned Holodeck - is high on just about every player's want list. The addition of customizable crew quarters and locations like Ten Forward, meanwhile, add all sorts of possibilities for extra social gameplay options. Integrating all of that into the game might be tough but the depth that could potentially be added as a result, not to mention the increased appeal to Star Trek fans, is difficult to overestimate.

If something like this happens I can safely say I'm sold on getting this game.

I've always wondered whether they could use the Holodecks as a platform for people to play user made content, arena battles, things like that.

Edit: 3000th post, yay.

I am also among those who will give the game a shot if this could be done. If you could have multiple players inside one ship, acting as crew (perhaps to repair damaged systems or re-route power to buff weapons or shields), that would be even more awesome.

Arena combat already exists, though a holodeck would be a good way to frame that.

Cryptic's pretty much stated they didn't intend for players to be able to actually control their ships from the bridge. Still, it is a neat thought.

That would be all kinds of awesome.

But seriously, that guy in engineering had it coming.

Yeah... Despite my roommate's ban of even mentioning Star Trek Online in the house, I'd pick it up and try it if it had explorable ship interiors.

Sadly, this is Cryptic, a company that says stuff like this, then never does it. See 90% of Champions Online if you want proof.

Hell, Yes. 'Course, if Runescape [http://runescape.wikia.com/wiki/Trawler] taught me anything about teamwork on MMORPGs, this will lead to massive griefing (which could be funny if you could address disciplinary problems with your fists)

even the thrice-damned Holodeck
I understand the holodeck breaks more often than an xbox360 but why thrice-damned?

I want to get this game badly, but the large investment of a ps3 for god of war 3 leaves me waiting a few months before I get it. I've read the review from beta but how is it preforming now that its live?

Does it fall prey to the pitfalls of the other cryptic games such as evil xp curves and poor soundtrack direction? I'd very much like to let WoW collect dust for at least 6months before I would give this game up.

As for exploring the innards of your star-ship, its a nice idea but pulling it off I think will be tricky. Its safe to assume you won't be able to pilot your ship if you're wandering around inside of it, leaving you prey to any players or npc's that come along. That is unless when you go inside your ship it zones you out of playable space and essentially "pauses" gameplay so you do what you need to do inside of it.

An excerpt from Kirks Log...

Captains Log; Stardate: February 14, .2

For 3 days, the crew and I, have been stuck on-the-bridge, with no hope of escape! The doors, seem, to be painted on. As we approach day 4, we must decide who to eat in, order to survive. Personal note, Ensign Ricky looks, particularly tasty.

Wait, what? That wasn't in the game to begin with? And half of any startrek episode is people monkeying about in jeffries tubes. My-my, thank god I didn't get this.

Now THAT is what I'm talking about. Give me that and I'd be more than interested in picking up Star Trek Online, especially since it's made by Cryptic, who made the only other MMO I was ever interested in playing (City Of Heroes.)

Well that is rather strange they didn't have it in the first place, considering the ship is the de facto stage for most Star Trek episodes.
