It didn't "Check its facts or ask enough questions"?

How about it get some facts and actually Ask questions that verify the story first!

I notice that no one has said whether or not that poor woman has recieved an apology.
I think it's high time that people started calling the media out for their bulls**t.

"hopefully the damages paid were enough to make the Star think twice before publishing anything without checking its facts first."

Hahahahahha, oh you optimist. They wont change at all. They be back to their old tricks soon enough.

They knew they'd have to apologize, but getting the added publicity probably outweighed the consequences. I don't believe any of that "we didn't check" lark. They made the whole thing up and got what they wanted out of it. The apology was inevitable, just to avoid lawsuits.

Yes, I suppose that's true. If the story had been bigger, with it getting plastered all over the news everywhere, then R* could definitely sue.

Really, I just want Daily Star to shove it. I've never heard of them nor do I care about them, but damnit it really gets annoying when video games are targeted with this crap and essentially compared to pornography peddlers (in general, not specifically here, though I do have an idea that I really want to run with...)

That at it's really disgusting how they actually asked the grandmother of a victim what she thought of the "game". You have to be pretty-fucking-sure of something to go that distance.
If you ever want to use ammunition against the Daily Star, you can remind them how they partake in the exploitative practice of EVERY SINGLE DAY dedicating all of Page 3 to a topless model, usually only 18 years old if that. Put "Page 3 Girl" into wikipedia. And then these publications have the nerve to be outraged about smut and immorality.

Yes, front page news of death, torment and fear, put turn over that page for Softcore Pornography and terrible sex-related puns about the atrocities of the past 24-hours. THAT is the kind of publication we are talking about.

But don't worry, the Universe has a way of sorting these things out.

Print media is under incredible pressure at the moment, as advertisers move online where it is far more lucrative, manufacturing costs and changing demographics mean papers like Daily Star are selling at a fraction of what they used to.

Daily star is loosing its young psychotic male readership to online and to glossier print publications like Nuts (similar to Playboy only far scummier) and oldies with their pensions being squeezed aren't buying multiple papers any more and anyway, they have Sky News for the hourly-hate anyway.

Daily Star doesn't have a future, it's not long for this world. There is no need for any coup de grace, just leave it to founder in the desert as it dwells in the past.
I didn't know fully who the "Daily Star" was until I figured out it was part of the "Daily Sun", so that just made it a whole lot worse. While I would like to just sit and wait for this to die into oblivion, I doubt that would actually happen. All they would do is switch over to the internet, like this article, and if they keep on knowingly posting false news, then apologize, and give them a small amount of money (compared to court costs) then they'll never get the deserving foot up their ass, and one down their mouth.

The funny thing is that TIG Source is running "A Game by its Cover," where people take fake game convers like this and make real games out of them. I don't think any one would have the poor taste to choose this cover for their 1 month creation, but there are some GTA spin offs in the mix.

I don't get the Daily Star where I live, but with it's obsession with rumor and general lack of integrity, it sounds like nothing more than a glorified high school newspaper.

About 90% of what the star prints is untrue or at least some way manipulated. Not surprised. Glad they had to fork out though.

About time they made up for their mess-up. Hopefully the tabloids will treat gaming with more respect.

So did someone go to the guy's wife and tell him that they were the ones making money by mocking her tragedy, and not Rockstar?
