So recently, I watched an old OVA called Dangaioh: Hyper Combat Unit. Pretty decent, I'd say.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dangaioh

When I looked it up online, I noticed that Hideaki Anno (Evangelion, Gunbuster) had worked on it, either as an art director or with key animation.

However, his name is not listed in the opening nor ending credits, nor on the staff's official website.

So... Did he actually work on it at all? I'm just asking out of curiosity, and I haven't found any answers via Google.

I'm not really too sure!
His IMDB page does NOT have Hyper Combat Unit Dangaioh listed.
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0030417/

Nor does the Hyper Combat Unit Dangaioh page have Hideaki Anno listed, so I'd wager he either simply didn't work on it, his involvement was so small no one credited him and he didn't care, or he wanted to go uncredited for some reason.

I doubt he'd really want to go uncredited, so I'd pretty much wager he just didn't work on it :)

Someone can prove me wrong though!

Edit: it's also worth noting that Hideaki co-founded Gainax in 1984 and was working there in 1987 when Hyper Combat Unit Dangaioh was release/produced. However, Gainax is not the studio that made Hyper Combat Unit Dangaioh.

I'd say the evidence is strong he had little or no involvement in the project.

Pretty much this. Anno is many things, but he isn't the type of person to let his work go uncredited, no matter what the quality if (and the movie he's most well known for it a perfect example of this).

TVTropes lists Anno as a key animator, but they could just be copy-pasting from Wikipedia and, as previously stated IMDB does not. Anime News Network's encyclopedia also lists him as art director, but it comes with a note that there's no source for that. MAL also does not list him in staff credits.

In conclusion: he probably wasn't, but it is possible. Japanese staff do go by pseudonyms all the time, after all.
