Dante's Inferno showed me something I'd never seen in a game before

I finished Dante's Inferno a few hours ago. It wasn't anything special, kind of a mess and had a fair amount of problems: incoherent story, nonentity characters, enemies had too much health, much padding in combat sections, obviously rushed towards the end etc., but enjoyable enough to carry me to the end. But there was one thing that showed up in the final boss that I'd never seen in a video game that took me by surprise, and made me at least respect the game for having the guts to show it.

Guess what it is?

Come on, try!

I dare ya!

You really wanna know?

Okay...

Here's a link, as putting up a picture would break The Escapist's guidelines: http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb169/cardozocar_2007/Dante2Maro29.jpg

That's right, it's a massive, floppy, swinging cock in between the final boss's legs. I guess I should have expected it in a game which already has enemies that attack you with vagina tentacles and a boss that squeezes killer babies out of her tits, but it was still quite unexpected. Usually nudity of vital areas in games is limited to female chestal areas, but Dante's Inferno went all the way. Even if I didn't like the game that much, at least it got my respect for having the balls (pun very intended) to do what even God of War, a series particularly famous for its graphic content, hadn't dared to do. I just wonder if the guy who worked on the animation of the particular member wants to mention it in future job interviews. "So it says you worked on Dante's Inferno on your resumé. Care to elaborate?" "Uhhh, yeah, I was the guy whose job was to make sure Satan's meat and two veg jiggled and swung in the right way."

For the record, I actually think a sequel could work. The game was mechanically sound and the graphics weren't bad, so a longer development time and some sanding of rough edges could make for a great game. There's certainly lots to draw from in the source material, and considering how little the game had to do with the novel anyway, making it a completely independent story wouldn't piss me off.

For discussion value: what games showed you something that you completely weren't expecting and hadn't really seen before? Be it child deaths, sex, killing innocents or something similar. And if you feel like it, what did you think of Dante's Inferno?

I never actually played dante's inferno, not realy my cup of tea and i dont own the requisite console anyway.

My example would probably be....

Death by nuclear bomb/radiation in that one call of duty game, My brother owned the pc version and i happend to be there for the scene, can't say it left a huge impression on me considering the amount of people that die in the game but pretty unique non the less. First person helicopter crash and stumbling out of it alive only to die moments later is somthing you don't see too often in games.

I expect some people will probably mention one rather infamous moment in spec op's the line.

The worst part of Satan dong is that for the finishing blow you literally ride him into the ground crouching on his chest. perfect angle and everything. zero chance it didn't at least hit dante on the butt once or twice.

Curse you! My thunder; she has been stolen!

Well I'm going with it anyway. I won't say the actual part (even though everyone knows it by now anyway) but as someone who loves Call of Duty and knew nothing of "the scene" before getting there, I was absolutely floored.

For something else, I think Catherine showed me a lot of things I never wanted to see. At the end of each puzzle, you end with a boss battle and each boss represents something going through Vincent's (the main character) mind. The night the first time you cheat in the game, this is your monster...

Yes, that's a butt monster.

Just in case you try to convince yourself that that is NOT what you think it is, you are later told just how kinky you are and how she's never done THAT before...

Don't ever change Atlus.

I've seen a few go all the way. Persona has Mara, the penis persona you can use in battle, while Southpark had the main character get smacked by a giant testicle.

On the subject of Dante's Inferno, there's that monster (Cleopatra) that spews lil' undead cupids from her engorged nipples.

Haha, yeah. I remember Satan's massive floppy dick. Not much else; just Satan's happystick. I wonder if it was motion captured.

Wasn't there that boss with (proportionally) double H cups and nipples that shot monsters out or something? Never before have I played a game so sexual it looped back to nonsexual.

All I remember of Dante's Inferno is that Lucifer was the most interesting character for me, Virgo or whatever his name was just bored me, Dante was shit, and the girl was alright, not great, but she was interesting enough.

Also, the ending doesn't change regardless, as it turns out, so there's no point to making the choice between absolving or attacking. And why did no one tell Dante that he was dead, why did he have to learn from the devil?

Anyways, on the topic at hand, I can't think of anything that hasn't already been said, as sad as that is; maybe Dark Souls, where the game actually had a story, but didn't come out and tell me the story. Pretty much every other game I played either had a story, and I knew it, or it didn't have a story, and I knew that. Dark Souls was the first game I can think of where the story was there, but I didn't quite know it until later.

I knew exactly what this thread would be about. That insanely demented bosses are the only things worth mentioning in Dante's Inferno

Anywoo, add another for Spec Ops: The Line. I'll never shoot at white figures so freely as I did thanks to that game.

Tales from the Borderlands has a "bro" moment which is such a wonderful use of the unreliable narrator trope and of such great humour that I genuinely laughed out loud.

It's been so long we've had a game based around being funny, and was actually funny, with jokes and meta-humour and all of it, while still being good and fun, rather than just being funny because it's got nothing else going for it.

This is actually one of the reasons I liked Dante's Inferno (no, not for Satan's dick): it was one of the very few games out there that really did go all out and didn't hold anything back. Baby killing (and killer babies)? Check. Full frontal nudity of both sexes? Check. Creatures that vomit and shit? Check. Climbing on walls of people? Check. Disgusting creatures that really, actually disgust you? Check.

Too bad the gameplay wasn't anywhere up to snuff.

I've never played a video game that made me feel so bad about playing a video game, while also being quite a good game in its own right.

Wolfenstein: The New Order showed me not one, but two sex scenes that have a thematic relevance.

First one to ever pull that off.

I remember the first dick I saw in gaming.
Shiro Tokashida Amakusa's in the gameboy port of Samurai Shodown. Pretty sure it was anyhow. Kinda hard to see, so that's probably why it slipped passed the censors that removed the blood, fatalities, and language implying death.

Legend of Dragoon showed a cutscene so grand I thought the game was over. It was nowhere near over, of course, it was just the first tree returning to life.

Yie Ar Kung Fu showed me my first fighting female opponent, though likely she was only the second I've seen that required special demands be met to fight her. The first of the latter was prolly street fighter which I played offa floppy discs.

When EVERYONE died in MW2. I was like 10 years old when I first played it and I found it ridiculous that your first character dies in the third mission.

Thanks, glad you enjoyed it because the days of mocap for that scene was gruelling and not to mention uncomfortable.

Plus it's an FPS too which when tied in with thematic sex makes it a pretty ground breaking game.

Dante's Inferno taught me something too. It's to never trust a game developer to be faithful to the book.

I'd have to say FEAR 2 and Walking Dead.

I was ghost raped and had to cut off someone's leg with a hatchet while they begged me to stop.

Definitely memorable.

Beyond Atlantis showed me MANY things I had never seen in a game before. None of them were shocking, but I'll be darned if forcing the player through Literal Bureaucratic Hell wasn't wasn't totally appreciable on a meta level. xD
