Dark Souls 2 Gameplay Footage, Screens and Peter Serafinowicz

BLLLERRRG! ARRRRRG! BLEEEEERG! Hey, wasn't he in Shaun of the Dead? AAARRRG!

As it's Friday, and you deserve to be murdered repeatedly in a fantasy environment, feast thine eyes on the ways in which Dark Souls 2 [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/125388-Dark-Souls-II-Director-Accessible-Does-Not-Mean-Easy] intends to chop you into little bits. Yes, that's your leg that dog's having a go at. Aren't you lucky! Also, some screens of mysterious fellows and their sharp implements. Plus one mysterious fellow without a sharp implement, just to tease you.

The extra mysterious fellow is comedian Peter Serafinowicz, of Shaun of the Dead and Spaced fame. He's new to Dark Souls 2, and will be voicing Mild-Mannered Pete, who has dark, unmentionable motives. "He may teach players a few tricks of his own in order to survive during their quest," says Namco Bandai. "Will they dare to trust this enigmatic character?"

With a name like Mild Mannered Pete? How could you not? Dark Souls 2 [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/131392-Dark-Souls-II-Director-Hasnt-Thought-About-PS4-or-Xbox-One-Ports] is due March 11th for PC, Xbox 360 and PS3.

Ooof, I can barely wait for this. Thoroughly enjoyed Dark Souls 1.
But man, if that last picture in the slideshow isn't -somehow- related to the plot I'll be sorely disappointed.

Wow that person was terrible. They played like I did the for the first hour, completely unaware of how to let stamina regenerate faster.

I am glad to see that they have kept the overall style from the original. It looks like "more of the same" but with some new stuff attached. I hope they keep the same kind of style for exploration too. I really enjoyed the way everywhere was linked in Dark Souls, but some areas were inaccessible purely due to the enemies as opposed to invisible walls and such.

Now I just have yo hurry up and finish the first in time.

I'd so much rather get "take me by my hand and show me the way" story then purely open world like the first one had. I mean seriously when you look at it there are locations that are easy enough even for people new to the game and then there are hellish places like catacombs yet as a newbie you have no real idea where are you supposed to go first... Man my first trip to graveyard was painful ;_;

But that's what Dark Souls is made for. The tears streaming down your/my scared and confused face are what make the game so enjoyable. Stockholm Syndrome at it's best, man.

EDIT:

I'm not sure what on earth that is, but I'm making it my new profile picture for everything

Wasn't Pete turned into a zombie in Shaun of the Dead? How can he be Mild Mannered? I remember Pete was pretty pissed off in that film.

He was also the speaking voice of Darth Maul in Phantom Menace.

Uhm, this video was... pretty scarce. "Let's watch two(three/four/five/six) players fail miserably in the same two areas. WOO, PROGRESS!"

I guess it makes sense given the last bit and the person voicing the character, but man. There's better footage out there :L

Lot's of new information regarding mechanics and options coming from the San Francisco event. Most prominent being an opt-in in-game chat for players who want to co-op (done by wearing a special ring) and a new "burn" mechanic. You can burn items at the bonfires to apply different effects to the game. One of which looks like it will stop invasions.

Also... this was uncovered within the network test code. Pretty much the best news I've heard yet.

Yes, I was on Twitch when they were streaming a Dark Souls 2 AMA, this being the most glorious of the news! Praise the FromSoft!

So far gameplay looks good, player obviously is bad, but from what I hear the game is much much harder then Dark Souls with the new aggressive and smarter AI.
All that's left... is to wait one. more. month.

I hope that the game is not as easy as the two areas we saw there in the 9 minute trailer of someone new to the game dying repeatedly complete with moments such as equipping a shield they can't use and walking towards a knight while casting a ranged spell.

It was still a decent trailer though because the game looks awesome. The graphics have improved and everything looks like it flows together so much more smoothly now. I can't wait to try playing the game!

It's probably good that they have those areas though so that new players can get used to it. The first one really threw you into it and so many people got put off because they wandered into the graveyard(I did this too XD). I just hope it's as challenging and unforgiving as the first one.

Just a few tidbits from some folks who went to San Francisco to play the game.

You start with 1 Estus flask. 1 flask. You also get 10 life gems, but once those are gone, you've got nothing else. Each death your health decreases 10% until it gets to half. In the hour they had to play the game, they were able to get ~ 900 souls, and they couldn't level up at all. The consumable items were all several thousand souls a piece. They couldn't afford anything.

This game is going to unbelievably punishing. There is supposedly a penalty for disconnecting if playing online, though it's not confirmed. Also, if you sin by invading a lot, your health can be lowered all the way down to 10%.

If you're a bad player - one who invades a lot - your sin level will rise, and your health will drop below 50% down as far as 10%. Burning a human effigy is the only way to regain your human form and reset it

Oh wow, thanks for that.
I had heard about the health lowering to up to 50% on death but I didn't know about the sin penalty. Sounds like they are going to really punish those who sin too much rather than just sicking the darkmoons on them.

Though I imagine the lack of souls may be because it was a demo. I imagine in the actual game you can get souls much more quickly.

So when you say one Estus flask do you mean one use before it runs dry until you assumedly can kindle a bonfire for more? I would guess then that the default amount it fills is maybe one use so kindling bonfires will become much more important.

Everything I hear about this game makes me want it more >.<

Is it the Network test areas?
Because I've played that and I don't want to spoil myself on any of the other areas in the game.
I'm already sold on the game after playing it so I'm just gonna wait and see eveything when I'm inching cautiously through the game myself. Still, I imagine it looks great.

^What I was thinking... It's amazing to see someone so aware of the use of dodge but so completely oblivious to its timing. Almost seems intentional.

And I agree with you, I'm glad to see the core system unchanged. If it ain't broke... :)

Well i hope they include something akin to the undead asylum demon in Dark Souls 2, because fighting him without going for the better weapon is the perfect training ground to train yourself in proper dodging. Seriously, i spent like 5 hours in total trying again and again to kill it with just the broken sword you get, afterwards i never needed a shield again, which is kinda funny in hindsight.

That being said, its kinda terrible to watch, although truth be told, everyone gets hit at least once or twice for being just a split second off on the timing of your dodge, or dodging in the wrong direction.

Combat looks a lot smoother than what I remember from the PC version of nr1.

Graphics still aren't a strong point though.
