Dawn of the Planet of the Apes Gets New Post-Apocalyptic Trailer

Gary Oldman readies humanity for gorilla warfare in the new trailer for Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.

Warning: Spoilers up ahead.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes was probably one of the more delightful surprises of 2011. A reboot of a classic franchise, it not only <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/escape-to-the-movies/3821-Rise-of-the-Planet-of-the-Apes>did its source material justice but also arguably ascended the original Apes movies in many regards. To put things shortly, it was a good movie that left plenty of room for a sequel. Dawn of The Planet of the Apes, <a href=http://www.digitalspy.com/movies/news/a384823/dawn-of-the-planet-of-the-apes-announced-for-may-2014-release.html>originally announced last year, will be that sequel and, if a recently released trailer is any indicator, it looks to be shaping up into a worthy follow-up to the first film.

As the trailer begins, we're informed by Gary Oldman's disembodied megaphone voice that things have kind of gone badly for the human race in the wake of the monkey revolution Caeser led in Rise. Humanity has been devastated by the artificial virus James Franco's character was working on and the years since have been a chaos of civil war and infighting as the survivors have struggled to bring themselves back from the brink.

From there, it's heavily implied that the humans are readying themselves to fight against Caeser's band of intelligent apes who happen to live nearby. There's not much given to indicate exactly why Oldman and his cohorts would want to fight a tribe of super smart chimps, but we'll trust that the movie will provide some good reasons. The trailer ends with Caeser looking a bit less amicable than he was in the original movie.

To its credit, the trailer is fairly gripping and does a good of selling the sequel. Then again, all they really had to do was reiterate that Andy Serkis will be returning to do the motion capture for Caeser. After his stellar performance in Rise that would have been more than enough to convince me to buy a ticket for Dawn. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is currently set to open in theaters in July 2014.

Looks interesting, I enjoyed the first one at the cinema, haven't rewatched it since then though.

I still can't decide if I like Rise or not, myself. It had some good acting, it addressed some serious issues in a way science fiction should and it didn't offend me in any particular way. But in all the times I watched it (and I watched it several) I was never able to really get over that feeling of ambivalence I had toward it. I've never come across a movie that made me feel that way about it, so that at least makes it memorable.

But this . . . I don't know. The one thing I could put my finger on that I know I didn't like was the whole virus thing at the end. Like mankind had to completely bring about its own doom. That doom couldn't come because of the tyranny of evolution and us just being outdone by a superior species, no, we had to kill ourselves off with a virus.
And now this comes out. What I really wanted to see was the rise of some attempts at negotiation with the apes, and conflict between the factions that want to accept the apes as a legitimate intelligent species and possibly their own nation, versus those who didn't think the apes had any rights because they were just the product of an experiment that got out of control. A good moral conflict that didn't appear to have any easy answers, where both sides had serious problems and neither could win without something bad happening.
But now it appears we're just going to have war. *sigh*
I hope I'm wrong. I mean, even though I'm not sure if I liked it or not, Rise was still way better than I expected it to be and Hollywood is notorious for marking films in extremely misleading ways because they think they know what people want to see and if they have to trick people into the seats, that's just fine and dandy . . . but, to quote every character in Star Wars, I have a bad feeling about this.

I saw Rise of the Planet of the Apes on DVD and it was worth the rental. I am definitely catching the follow-up in theaters.

Makes me wonder if they will do another reboot of [/i]Planet of the Apes[/i] but without the Tim Burton lameness of the last one.

It has both Caesar and Gary Oldman going for it, so I'm pretty curious. Caesar definitely seems like he's seen some stuff. Unless primate politics kicks him off the throne, he'll be emperor of the world by the end for sure. I, too, would like to see more of the world teetering off the brink (like World War Z) but it seems from the trailer like we're skipping to the end of the conflict after we've been guerilla/gorilla fighting for a few years (going by the vegetation). If it's like Rise then this should be pretty decent. I don't expect it to pull a Dark Knight (highlight of the franchise) but you never know with Gary Oldman. He adds a definite pedigree to any film.

As long as Andy Serkis steals the show once again I'll be happy. And it looks like it'll shape up that way so I'll be in cinema on day one hopefully.

I thoroughly enjoyed Rise, it was a shining beacon for Science Fiction movies in 2011. The acting was good, the story was excellent and I loved watching the Ape Rebellion at the end. It was ripe for a follow up, I just don't know if I will appreciate the time lapse between films. I'll give it a shot though.

I laughed far too hard at the 'gorilla warfare' part
What the fuck did you just fucking say about me, you little *****? I?ll have you know I graduated top of my class in the Navy Seals, and I?ve been involved in numerous secret raids on Al-Quaeda, and I have over 300 confirmed kills. I am trained in gorilla warfare and I?m the top sniper in the entire US armed forces. You are nothing to me but just another target. I will wipe you the fuck out with precision the likes of which has never been seen before on this Earth, mark my fucking words. You think you can get away with saying that shit to me over the Internet? Think again, fucker. As we speak I am contacting my secret network of spies across the USA and your IP is being traced right now so you better prepare for the storm, maggot. The storm that wipes out the pathetic little thing you call your life. You?re fucking dead, kid. I can be anywhere, anytime, and I can kill you in over seven hundred ways, and that?s just with my bare hands. Not only am I extensively trained in unarmed combat, but I have access to the entire arsenal of the United States Marine Corps and I will use it to its full extent to wipe your miserable ass off the face of the continent, you little shit. If only you could have known what unholy retribution your little ?clever? comment was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have held your fucking tongue. But you couldn?t, you didn?t, and now you?re paying the price, you goddamn idiot. I will shit fury all over you and you will drown in it. You?re fucking dead, kiddo.

Eh, first one was certainly entertaining. Could be this one will be the go-to film of this coming summer. Though where the hell is James Franco's character?

This... especially since I'm still psyched for this sequel...

And, yet again, I got a lot of movies to watch in 2014 with this one in the top 3 of sequel movies to watch...
