DayZ Alpha Sells 172K in Its First Day

DayZ sold a solid 172,500 copies of its Early Access alpha edition in its first 24 hours of release.

The standalone version of DayZ released recently in alpha form on Steam Early Access and, by all accounts, made a fairly big splash in its opening hours. Despite the developer openly warning customers that this early version still has some screws loose, more than <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/130626-DayZ-Rushed-By-New-Players-After-Early-Access-Launch>88,000 players bought their way into the game in its first 12 hours of availability.

These weren't the end of the game's sales however and in it's now been revealed that, in its first 24 hours, DayZ managed to sell more than 172,500 copies, earning Bohemia Interactive $5.12 million. While obviously not putting it up in the same tier as day one mega-sellers <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/129362-Call-of-Duty-Ghosts-Made-1-Billion-in-One-Day>like Call of Duty and its ilk, it's still impressive for a game that, by <a href=http://maruksp.tumblr.com/post/70324805302/first-day-of-dayz-alpha-hours-passed-24>the admission of Bohemia Interactive's own CEO, is still pretty well riddled with bugs and needing a lot of hard work.

What will be interesting to see going forward is how high these numbers rise in the long term. After all, the original DayZ mod became popular in spite of it still largely being a work in progress. It's very possible that these numbers just represent its established fan base jumping on board with the new version. Whether or not sales will continue climbing is something we'll be interested to see.

This way reads much better.

As for DayZ, I hope it does well. It not being something I'm interested in and a passing remembrance of dev attitude issues aside, it's an indie dev creating a game that spreads genre wings.

I wish them all the success in the world.

But honestly wasnt early access suposed to get you to support a project before its release for a lowered price since its clearly an unfinished one, in some cases years before a stable release?

People are paying full release prizes for alphas here... am i the only one who has a problem with that? Especialy seeing the lack of progress on some of these projects?

Take a look at planetary anihilation wich demands 60 dollars... 60 dollars for an indie project and early access? Have they gone mad?

Anyways what seemed to be a good idea at first (you know.. letting players early into your game at a lowered price to help you finish it) has turned into an early cashgrab with shaky promises of not letting the project die once the steady stream of money from those buyers is done.

I mean once everyone has bought the early access why even further invest time into that particular game.. after all everyone who wants it allready got it right, its not like you gonna get a big influx of sales at release?

So yeah.. a good idea to start with turned into yet another cash grab.

The people that forked out for it tell me that no, they haven't.

Having said that, with Total Annihilation available for a couple of pounds I'm content to play that instead and wait for the proper release.

No.

That was the same price as the Early Access Kickstarter Pledge level.

This is some good news to hear. Plus, I'm glad they're taking their time to work on the beta version with the aid of players before graduating to the alpha release. Further proof that quality cannot be rushed, which is a lesson the makers of The War Z should have learned.

Best of luck to the developers of DayZ.

Yes it is bothering me that devs are charging nearly full price for Early Access titles that are years from completion.

If I am going to criticize AAA devs for charging full AAA price for content that isn't complete or stable (BF4) then I can't give indie devs a pass for doing the same bullshit.

The "Minecraft Model" that indie devs keep stating they are doing actually ends up being more expensive in the beginning and cheaper later when everyone loses interest before the game is even out of beta unlike minecraft.

At the end of the day if gamers never learn their lesson from pre-orders, season passes, and early access failures and abuses then they deserve what they get.

I am admittedly apprehensive about the Alpha model they are using here. It worked for Minecraft because the Alpha version was significantly cheaper, and worked well enough in that state, based solely of course on the creativity of the one playing it. Heck, I think the standalone creative mode was even free at that point. Here on the other hand, asides from essentially paying to become a tester, there really isn't any guarantee that the final product will be any more expensive.

I am definitely intrigued by the game, but asides from probably being unable to run it, I just don't want to pay the price of admission. Not yet, anyway.

A ton of those 172k people have gone out and called the game broken, while, as usual, disregarding the fact that they bought an ALPHA build of a software, so they're actually surprised when the game doesn't run in some cases. Fucking geniuses.

Anyway, best of luck to the devs, I'll pick it up possibly when it hits Beta.

Bohemia started the Early acces beta trend back in 2006 with ARMA: Armed Assault, they just never alled it a beta. But ever since Operation flashpoint CWC in 2001, they have always been giving out the patches needed and the game is usually finished 1-2 months before the next game in the series come out.

This song illustrates the relationship quite well.
