DayZ Gets An Official (Secret) Release Date

DayZ creator Dean Hall knows when his zombie survival hit will make its retail debut, but the rest of us remain in the dark.

If you're waiting for the official, retail release of DayZ, you'll be waiting a bit longer. How long? We aren't exactly sure.

Dean Hall, creator of the popular ArmA II modification focused on survival in the zombie apocalypse, offered the following words at the recent Rezzed 2013 conference:

I guess the big question that a lot of people have is when we're actually going to get [the retail version of DayZ] out.

We've set a date now ... like a window of about a week. And we're not going to say when that is because originally we were going to release [the game's keys] in 50,000 key increments, but we've kind of decided to do everything kind of all together.

We really want to focus on making sure the architecture is good, so that we can get feedback.

In sum, Hall knows when DayZ should appear, but wants to ensure that the game is as polished and comprehensive as possible before it officially greets the public.

Yes, DayZ has been available for months now, but that version of the game is technically a beta release and Hall has often stated that the retail incarnation of DayZ will feature more content and a number of design tweaks. This, combined with the en masse roll out, is why the game is currently not sitting on your hard drive in retail form.

With Hall mentioning a release window (even a secretive one), we have to expect he's nearing a point where he may feel comfortable nailing down an official public date. We'll keep our eyes out for that info and bring it to you just as soon as it's available.

From everything that Rocket has said about this game, I really can't wait for it. Even just the alpha.

Based not just on the whole "omg zombies" feeling that I have, but more on what they are adding to the player/survivor interaction. It fascinates me.

It's like one big social experiment. XD

Well yeah, release dates started somewhere in late 2012 if I remember correctly. Still, he says he'd rather delay the release then do a buggy fucked up alpha nobody wants to really play, which I respect.

Yet I'd like to know a certain timeframe soon because I'm seriously torn whether me and friends should still get Arma 2 or wait for the standalone release. If only I'd gotten it half a year ago like I planned to I wouldn't have this problem now!

Been a while since I've fired-up Day Z. I wonder how much its changed.
The latest patch made things brutally hard again. Infections from zombies are now a real danger and loot is even more scarce. It was tuned a little bit too far I think but it definitely brings back the survival aspect of the game that had been missing for a while. Whether or not this is a good thing depends on who you ask.

Better a game released late and polished, than kicked out the door to meet a deadline and get get crushed by game breaking problems (Here's lookin' at you Simcity)

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't anxiously awaiting this game though, I had to stop playing the mod due to too many skiddies ruining the experience, but the early days were by far one of the most unique and exhilirating gaming experiences I've ever had.

Sure, no-one wants to play a game that's still in development. Do you know minecraft? That was a major failure. I'm guessing all those extra copies of ARMA2 & operation arrowhead are buying all his golden toilets.

That's probably why he hasn't announced a release date.

I didn't say "in development", I said "buggy" and "fucked up", that's a big difference. Yes he wants to do a release model similar to Minecraft with Alpha and Beta buyer reward but he wants the first Alpha release of the game to be actually playable and enjoyable and since they're doing major rewrites of the Arma engine that may take its time, not much use going public with half an engine.

*ahem*

Wanted to. That little plan of his changed quite some time ago.

Then I guess it isn't the first time he's announce an unannounced date.
