DayZ Servers Hacked

The popular ArmA II mod has suffered a serious security breach.

Popular zombie-survival-horror-funtime ArmA II mod DayZ has come under attack from a hacker "known to" [http://dayzmod.com/forum/showthread.php?tid=9606] one of the game's developers. The attacker breached and vandalized the game's forums before dropping some nasty software into its server space, leading some to hypothesize that the breach might carry the risk of creating a botnet.

Players are advised to follow the usual post-breach protocol, starting with changing their forum passwords. Anyone who downloaded a file named "dayz_auto_updater.exe" from the game's US mirror is advised to peruse this ThreatExpert.com report [http://www.threatexpert.com/report.aspx?md5=ead7a55075d5ce1a32353832bed88069] on the nasty little .exe and direct their anti-virus towards it.

The developers also say that the server hosts "who provided us with RDP details are comprised and need to thoroughly scan their server for the same type of processes and change their servers' RDP details and to NOT ever give the RDP details out to anyone *including DayZ* from now on." Whew.

According to information posted on the game's forums, the developers are now pursuing legal action against the attacker. Initial fears about a massive botnet spawning from the incursion were brought under control [http://dayzmod.com/forum/showthread.php?tid=9606] by Dean "Rocket" Hall, one of the game's lead developers, who reminded players that his group only has RDP/Admin access to 15% of its host servers.

We'll keep an eye on the DayZ forums for any updates, including clarification on the legal avenues open to the developers. It's worth remembering that the team behind the game is composed entirely of volunteers, so it might take a little longer than usual for this snafu to come unwrangled. In the meantime, there are probably a thousand puns and wordplays about a zombie game falling to "infection" waiting to be made. Knock yourselves out, Escapists.

That awkward moment when you were about to succumb to your friends endless droning about installing this mod. Give it a month now i'd say

"known"? i hope he gets what's coming to him.

Huh. This got hacked, and so did Project Zomboid. Looks like zombie indie games are being targeted.
Or maybe it's just a coincidence. Whoda thunk it.

I actually considered buying Arma 2 just to have a whack at this mod, but didn't because I'm a cheapskate and it still looked really buggy. Kinda glad I held off on it now.

I feel sorry for the developers of the mod though, now they'll have to waste a tonne of time cleaning out the game instead of improving it.

Fact: One of our Artist's PC's was hacked by a person known to him.
You'd think they would have the brains to prevent this sort of thing.
Thats it? Come on man, you could surely dig up some good ones.

Okay how about: Looks like they have a Resident Evildoer

Or from left field

What do you want to bet that "Rocket" staged the whole thing?

Thats much better, I knew you had it in you.

My friend has been nagging me to buy the game for the last couple of months, he even offered to buy me a copy of it, just to play with him, but I still refused, I'm glad neither I nor him bought the game (or another copy in his case). Now I'll nag him about the game being dead.

Given the general mentality and angst-driven rage on the forums, I'm surprised it took this long for the game to go down.

Woa guys. The game itself is fine, just the forums and website that were hacked. Unless you downloaded that nasty .exe the game itself should be perfectly fine.

I'm still curious as to why the escapist doesn't appear to have done any real article on the DayZ mod. Because right now, the game is the biggest mind-blowing fun I've had in any game - all other games pale in comparison, and this is with all the current bugs accounted for... Well worth the ?24.99.
