Interview with Shimbori. WARNING: LINK IS NSFW SITE. RELEVANT PART OF THE INTERVIEW QUOTED BELOW [https://doujins.com/blog/doa-6-director-comments-on-sexy-costumes-again-1077]

Interviewer: I'm sure you play other fighting games. Have you played Soul Calibur VI?

Shimbori: I have.

Interviewer: They went pretty far with the fanservice, and they seem to not have any problems...

Shimbori: The reason why they get away (with) it is one of the big mysteries of the world. Soul Calibur can do it and doesn't get a beating over it, but even when Dead or Alive doesn't do it, it still gets criticized.

If anyone can tell me why this happens, and how to fix it, please introduce them to me (laughs).

And it's actually a fairly good question; SC has been a fairly provocative series for almost as long as DoA has, including adding clothing destruction down to everyone fighting down in their skivvies WAY before DoA introduced even mild destruction, and has had fairly direct ads with Ivy compared to DoA's ads (except that one with the wall in Japan).

Yet other than some bashing on Ivy, SC generally gets away scot-free while DoA gets lambasted at every turn when it comes up. Even more so than explicitly sexual games like Senran Kagura, Sonicomi etc.

Tits. That's all. Its no longer in-vogue to have tits in games. Now if they reinvented the characters as middle-age hairy men with dad bods, it'd win every game award and probably the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.

One of those is from the main series.

The other is from the spin-off of a series created just for fun and with the sexy bits specifically dialed up to 11. Not a fair comparison.

When people hear Dead or Alive, most think on the Xtreme Beach Volleyball spin-off, because of their memorable marketing centered in the "bobbies mechanics". I don't think you can wiggle out of that reputation any more easily than Nintendo from their "games for children" reputation.

DOA was marketed more like softcore porn with its main games and the volleyball games. If Soulcalibur had a volleyball game with its female cast, then it would be treated badly by game journalism today.

Soulcalibur doesn't have this.

I don't know. I was never a hardcore fighter gamer but I play Street Fighter, Tekken sometimes and I've played a bit of Soul Calibur (the first still looks good for the time it came out) and I think I tried one DOA game for the original Xbox and it struck me as not that great just from a game play standpoint.

Can anyone who actually plays a lot of fighters comment on the actual fighting mechanics? Like, is there a good fighting game hiding underneath all the fan-service nonsense?

Soulcalibur is a fighting game series. Dead Or Alive after DOA4 is a voyeur porn game.

Soulcalibur never had to make a game where you watch Ivy sunbathe.

Did Soul Caliber ever have an player-age slider that determined boob physics?

This is an easy question to answer.

Well be fair Shimbori mate, DoA has pretty well always sold itself on the sex appeal of its characters, mainly the female ones but Ryu and Hayate have fangirls for a reason, which luckily for you has been backed up by a popular fightng system and environment but don?t sit there and bullshit us about why DoA cops it.

And in my opinion, Soul Calibur doesn?t get as much attention cos its pretty shit and even then I remember everyone rolling their eyes when Ivy was revealed for IV.

You can make SC chars be in the same type of outfits as DoA chars easily, Taki's old outfit even had outlines of her nipples. It's just that SC hasn't been marketed as being about that part of the game as much.

Basically it's just due to advertising and not any significant reasons.

Remember the days when Street Fighter went as far as showing a Naked Chun Li taking a shower in the Street Fighter 2 Animated Movie? Ass and Titties fully exposed? Good times...

DoA1 had ridiculous boob physics. That was its first impression so it stuck. Though I'd say its simply because people know DoA has a reputation of being sexy so it gets clicks when people pretend to be outraged about it.

Did you miss the Soul Calibur V ad that was a close up of Ivy's cleavage with the text "Go big or go home"?

I did, actually. Goes to show how they didn't really catch on with that approach. (also I happen to find Ivy totally unattractive, I like the ninja girls more :p)

It's because DoA was an easy target for journalists who don't have anything else to do but propagate false outrage for clicks.

DoA has one of the most in depth and realistic Fighting mechanics of any fighting game out there.
