Dead or Alive: Paradise's Swaying Boobs Don't Degrade Women

Implementing the jiggliest of jigglies in Dead or Alive: Paradise [http://www.amazon.com/Dead-Alive-Paradise-Sony-PSP/dp/B0036F7FX6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1279057721&sr=1-1] doesn't necessarily imply Team Ninja was trying to objectify females.

Dead or Alive: Paradise, an upcoming PSP game that the ESRB once described as being filled with "creepy voyeurism" where "women's breasts and butts will sway while playing volleyball," is allegedly not meant to be soft porn or to degrade women. Yoshinori Ueda, the game's director, told Eurogamer that the unique visuals are instead meant to be a tribute to the beauty of the female form.

The Dead or Alive series, which began in the fighting genre, has always been known for jiggly boobs, but the Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball [http://www.amazon.com/Dead-Alive-Xtreme-Beach-Volleyball-xbox/dp/B00006LEM3/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1279057748&sr=1-1] spin-offs (first released on the Xbox) take it to a different level, often putting the tools in players' hands to zoom in on every naughty bit possible as the game's characters play sports or lounge around an island resort. To anyone that thinks the games are soft porn, Ueda replies: "That's certainly not something we're intentionally going for. From our perspective, we're trying to make beautiful women, that has been the focus - we want our characters to be beautiful. The DOA characters are strong and that they look the way they do is based on trying to bring out the beauty of women."

"We're certainly not trying to degrade women," he says. Instead, his team is "trying to show off the beauty of their bodies ... trying to show that they are beautiful characters. It's not that we were trying to make softcore porn." Ueda apparently really, really, really enjoys the beauty of a specific type of woman: that which wears clothing which could barely be considered as such. Hasn't he ever heard of appreciating inner beauty as well? I wouldn't mind getting to know about Kasumi's goals in addition to watching gravity affect her protrusions.

I doubt Ueda is being entirely honest here. It's one thing to appreciate the beauty of a woman, but another to basically invent new technology to get body parts to jiggle more realistically. Whenever I look at Dead or Alive Xtreme, my brain usually releases a quick "wtf" at the shenanigans my eyes are sending back to it. The games aren't offensive, but it is rather funny just how far Team Ninja takes its "appreciation." Ueda says his goal with Dead or Alive: Paradise was "to offer a little bit of paradise," and I'm sure he'll be able to accomplish that goal for many people out there when the game releases next month. Please, just keep it behind closed doors.

Thanks Uena, I will now commence studying the games back story, understanding character motivations, the ultimate story and appreciate the gameplay, just that much more now that I know your not using Tits as a selling point.

After all, if tits was the selling point then you're not making a game any more. You're making Porn.

Of course, lots of people just 'inadvertently' make games that would be accurately classified as soft-core porn, it's a ridiculously common pitfall in game design.

Oh wait, no it's not, Team Ninja is full of crap - sure, you may be earnest in your appreciation for the female form, but that doesn't make you any less creepy, or voyeurs.

Wow... I have never seen an advertisement for anything that solely focuses on T&A. And I have seen trailers for pornos before.

...then again, I did watch all the way to the end of the trailer so they did something right.

"the unique visuals are instead meant to be a tribute to the beauty of the female form"

Haha. Come on now. Just look at that trailer. How can Yoshinori Ueda say that sincerely? There's artistic appreciation of the beauty of the human figure, both man and women, then there's "men like big boobies and bums, let's show them that and we'll sell copies".

It's just exploitation; it's been happening for centuries - decades in the media - and it's happening here. Whether there's anything seriously wrong with exploitation is another question, but there's no doubt that's what's here.

I could never take DOA seriously, it takes what was originally fan service to new levels of "we're fucking with you."

Needs much more Ayane.
Seriously though, Ueda's intentions aside, this is not showing they are beautiful. First of all they are not themselves in the "Extreme" sub-series, and faking it destroys any beauty there may have been. They are strong warrior women, not some dilly-dally girls who love to skip around like they're in a fairy tale. Secondly, oogling the women that bring the beauty you love so much to this world is just creepy, and not the way to pay tribute to it. Money's all there is to this, and it makes me feel ill.

Oh, please. You claim that's not soft porn, yet you gratuitously throw in a shot of two characters licking an ice cream cone together?

If they're trying to observe "the beauty of women", then some flaws in their bodies are REQUIRED.

Otherwise, they're showing off women's bodies THAT DON'T EXIST.

Mmmmm... boobs art. Art is what I meant to say. And damn fine art at that.

To be honest, I don't really see the problem with the DOA series. The explanation also makes sense a little bit, though I doubt that it's the ENTIRE reason for DOA's casts being filled with... bouncy bombshells.
