The fact of the matter is that you have to use a peripheral device to play a few missions. Sorry, but that's a downside. I shouldn't have to pull out up multiple machines to complete a video game I own. Most Wii U games don't even have that aspect. Its a gimmick. And not everyone has a smartphone.
May I ask you one question?
You could have messaged me this you know that?

Look, my point is that content for some is a negative. Not everyone has a smartphone, and not all smartphones have touchscreens. That's the downside here. I don't know how that isn't a negative to you, but in my eyes, gaming content should at least be accessible to everyone on the same level. I have no problem with DLC because it doesn't require me of anyone else to own or purchase a certain kind of device to access a few extra missions in a game.

This is different from DLC. This is MS trying to get more people using their app and in a sense, buying their tablet or phone. It's annoying.

Microsoft didn't make Dead Rising 3, Capcom Vancouver did. Microsoft set up a platform, and one of it's developers is trying to do something different with it. Something potentially interesting. Neither of us really know how it will all play out. Is it so wrong to even hint at keeping a positive attitude about anything?

I get why people were mad at DLC. It was asking for more money and that can be a prickly thing for some. But a free app available on any viable smart device (yes I know, not everyone has one but at this point they are reaching market saturation) is hardly what I'd call a deal breaker.

Why does EVERYTHING have to be horrible? It might be a fun cool extra.

And since you brought up the other consoles, lets examine that for a minute. The WiiU has it's price point markedly increased because of it's proprietary second screen. The controller is the bulk of that huge price, which many fans has claimed is a barrier to entry for the platform and it's resulted in low sales so far. Let's hope that turns around, but it is what it is at this moment. And Sony's second screen is the Vita. Now they are actually doing what you're accusing Microsoft of. They are making second screen options that you need proprietary hardware to use. Microsoft has made an app, free to download on any smart device. Not Microsoft smart devices, ANY smart device. From iPod Touch to Windows phone to your original point of a $400+ tablet, they will all use the Smartglass app.

And as for my question it's not like I want to know your shoe size or something personal. I'm just interested to know if you're actually planning on buying an X1 or Dead Rising 3, or if all this outrage is just an "in theory" sort of thing. And honestly, I think that has discussion value outside of either of our points. So I'm gonna put it out here. You may answer me publicly or in private, your choice. But since this is a conversation we've had publicly, I don't see the need to keep it between us. I'd genuinely like to know.

You do realize that Capcom was probably told by Microsoft to make those exclusive SmartGlass missions right? The game being published by Microsoft is a pretty big indicator of that. Capcom didn't choose to make exclusive missions that require a tablet/smartphone of their own accord.

That being said.

Your Wii U and Vita comparisons aren't as valid as you think when it comes to the second screen. Firstly, the Wii U's games have gone the same way as the Wii's games. They are, for the most part, ignoring focusing on the peripheral's gimmicky use. Like most reputable Wii games not really using motion controls after the Wii's second year, the tablet of the Wii U controller isn't getting much use. So to say that the tablet is a major barrier at this point isn't really valid. It's the lack of Nintendo making first party games, and the price is too much for how little the WiiU offers. Especially when its deluxe version is only $50 cheaper than the PS4.

To your point about the Vita. There has yet to be a game on the PS4 that has Vita specific missions. If that does happen, I'll give shit to whoever decides that's a great idea if or when they do it.

I'm not talking about using a second screen to access features on the console itself. I'm perfectly fine with that. Its the exclusive missions. That's what bothers me. And you still have it in your head that everyone has a tablet or a touchscreen smartphone. While a lot of people do, not everyone does. Especially not in rural areas of the US due to poor internet reception. Or here in Canada where internet is stupidly expensive.

My point is that the content should be ready for all and not for who has a shiny toy, yet you have yet to address that aspect.

And no I'm not getting an Xbox One. I may get Dead Rising 3 if it comes to the PC just like Dead Rising 2. I'm not getting an Xbox One due to crap like this. I shouldn't need 2 completely different machines to completely enjoy my game, and MS was really pushing that SmartGlass down our throats at E3.

Ooh, that's a rookie mistake. And you hate to see it happen.

You seem like a passionate person and I don't see any point in arguing with you anymore because we obviously aren't going to agree or it would have come earlier than now.

I would like to suggest we shake hands (err, metaphorically of course) and agree to disagree here. In my eyes, it's extra content for those who want to (or can) access it. The core game plays fine without it and therefore I don't mind that they came up with what I consider an interesting way to access something I think of only as a bonus. And to you it's some kind of money grab or plan to increase mindshare for Smartglass. I think, I don't want to try and speak on your behalf. That's just what I took away from our exchange. Feel free to correct me if I am mistaken on this point.

To me, this is how innovation happens. It may fail and I may be the only one who thinks this way, but I want to see how it plays out before I come to a final judgement. If I'm wrong and the game is lesser for this content being accessed in a non-traditional way, I'll come back here and eat a heaping helping of crow.

I will offer you a protip though. When you're debating someone and they ask you something like "does this even effect you" (like I did), it's never a good idea to walk into it that way. If I wanted to I could shred your entire point as being irrelevant because you aren't even planning to get the game. I wouldn't even need to make my points beyond that. Just a bit of friendly advice, take it or leave it.

So you're basically saying that because I'm not getting the console or getting the game, my opinion is invalid? That's where your whole point falls flat I'm afraid. That's like telling someone they can't have a valid opinion on the gun violence because they don't own a gun. Or even better, telling anyone they couldn't criticizes Microsoft's horrible DRM decisions leading up to E3 due to the choice not to buy the Xbox One.

Its a strawman point to say the least.

What makes my opinion valid is that it could lead to a trend in gaming that I don't want to see happening, and hope won't happen. I'd hope that we don't NEED to start using peripheral devices to wholly enjoy console gaming and I reckon that won't be the majority. But at the same time, my opinion on why this SmartGlass exclusive mission is a dumb idea is still valid, even though I won't be buying the game or console. In fact, its motivated me further away from the Xbox One, even with the removal of the aforementioned DRM.

I think its a dumb idea due to a number of factors:
-It reinforces that "extra content for some/complete with extra purchase" aspect that most gamers dislike to say the least
-It seems to be a tacked on peripheral gimmick display in the same vain as the WiiU tablet

-Its only there to push Microsoft's app. The game was already an exclusive so there's no competitive sales reason to have this feature.

I also doubt that Capcom really put a lot of effort into this feature the way its described. It seems to be just a way to get extra missions, but if there are SmartGlass mission specific items or achievements attached, I'm out. At least the playbook feature in EA's Madden NFL looked to actually enhance the experience, this seems like MS pushing tablets into people's hands and making revenue with their app. And yes, I know you can access SmartGlass on smartphones, but the way they were shoving that Microsoft Surface around at E3 you would have that we were as Microsoft's CES presentation rather than E3.

I think its a cool idea, as long as the same content is avaible to people that dont use the peripheral, whether it be through a seperate in game item/storyline/unlock etc.

I think you misunderstood what I was saying. I apologize if I conveyed the message poorly.

I wasn't saying your point was invalid. I was saying you opened yourself up to that kind of criticism or personal attack. Basically I baited you to see if you would take it. Call it a debate exercise. Please forgive my deception, but I love a good debate.

Of course it was a strawman, that was the entire point I was making. If I wanted to keep debating this topic I could just undercut your entire argument with baseless attacks on you rather than actually making my own points. Seriously, I was just offering some friendly advice. You can take it or leave it. I meant you no offense.

And I'll restate that I still disagree with you on the bonus missions. You keep throwing out the "extra purchase" argument when there is none. The app is free and it's a better option than the Vita or WiiU's proprietary offerings because it works with any smart device. Most people who play this without the Smartglass app will probably never even know that these bonus missions existed or care. But I don't find a problem in putting them there for those who want them and I don't mind if there are extras involved with it. Be they achievements or special attacks. This is why I made the DLC comparison earlier. These seem like things which add to a game (again, in my opinion). And if I understand you, you feel it's content cut out that would otherwise be accessible if not for Microsoft pushing their app on people.

I can appreciate your point about you not liking them, but second screen options are coming whether you want them or not. I plan to see how they play out before I get mad about them, you want to be mad about them now. That's really all this has come down to. And that is absolutely your right to be as mad as it makes you. Once I play it, I may be just as put off as you are, I just want to stay positive for now.

I'm not sure why you are surprised that Microsoft would use the Surface at the conference though. I mean what else should they do? Pull out an iPad? They're not stupid and they know what most people have. Sales data is out there. But you can't expect them to help promote their nearest competitor. But even this, I admit, if you are really upset about it then more power to you. I however, am not mad about it in the least. Surface tablets are powerful and I want one, so take that as you will.

Listen this has been fun. If I offended you earlier, that was not my intent. And I never meant to imply that your argument wasn't valid. Quite the opposite. But I'm simply not going to feel about this the way you do and you are not going to share my view. But thanks for debating it with me. I admire your passion on the topic. I would suggest that you go to Capcom Vancouver's website and try telling one of them. Who knows, maybe you can get someone to listen. I might not have said that a week ago, but after the One-80, anything is possible, right?

So, shake hands and agree to disagree? Yes? No?
