Dead Space Speculation

after playing both dead space games through from start to finish recently, ive been thinking about the plot and the origins of the markers.

the man made red marker caused hallucinations to stop the necromorph infection, but the titan marker led isaac to kill tiedemann and stross, the other two "creators." both markers create necromorphs and cause dementia, which makes people kill each other, allowing for necromorphs to be created, and also allowing for the creation of new markers.

i think that the red marker was badly engineered, which caused it to try and stop the infections, despite the dementia it caused. but the titan marker was properly made, allowing for a convergence event to take place.

as for the event itself? i think its a lifeboat system for an alien race. the markers cause dementia and murders, which leads to necromorphs, which then converge at the marker, triggering the event. the marker can then recombinate the necromorphs into the alien species once the creators are dead, allowing it to start again.

opinions and hole picking, people?

I dunno, I honestly think that it was a retcon. The two markers are just so incredibly at odds with each other that there is no way they can be working towards the same end, unless the Red Marker was trying to trick Isaac somehow. All the elements in Dead Space 1 and Downfall indicate that the Marker repulses and limits Necromorphs, and that by being sealed in Aegis it contained them somehow. But I think when they decided that Dead Space 2 would not take place on the Ishimura or Aegis again they had to change that plot point to facilitate the Necromorphs coming back. Now the marker causes Necromorph-itis and is trying to cause instrumentality. The two goals are completely at odds with each other. Plus, I don't remember, did they make or find the Red Marker? I thought they had just found it sitting on Aegis, dug it up in the guise of a planet cracking mission, and stuff happened from there.

As for what the endgame for the Marker is, I'm partial to the idea that its an alien WMD, sort of like the Halo rings. Their makers would drop them on planets full of people they didn't like, who would then go crazy and start killing each other and making more Markers, leading to a full-blown Necromorph infestation that would end with everyone dead. The point of the convergence was the final stage of the weapon, a giant psychic reaction from all the Necromorphs that would obliterate anything left standing, either psychically or physically.

.
the marker was man made and test fired on aegis 200 years before dead space, where it was abandoned on an amplfier plinth, and the system was sealed off, which is why the aegis mining operation was illegal. it was reverse engineered from the black marker on earth, which is why i say it may have been a poor copy.

the background logs you get at the end of dead space 1 say that they are the first necromorphs created, something to do with the human ribcage splitting in two and growing the spikey bit, then growing into an infector. your best bet is to complete ds 1 and read the logs yourself, they explain better than i can remember.
