I'm an old man, I grew up in the 80's and 90's with things like Power Rangers, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, NES, Gargoyles, and most relevant comic books and the X-men. Though comics and the X-men got their start way before my time, I would argue that I was a kid during the golden era of specifically the x-men comics with the Jim Lee run, and the original cartoon. The plights of the X-men were so easy to connect with though I misunderstood the racism allegory for a bullying one as I dealt with bullies as a kid not so much racism. Nevertheless I loved comics, from X-men I learned of the not as popular teams like X-force and X-Factor, the darker comics like Punisher and Deadpool, I absorbed it all and loved it.

What really stood out to me after watching Deadpool and Wolverine is that if you think back to Marvel comics mutant timeline comics, when you think about X-Men, X-factor, X-force, one figure, one character stands over all of it.

Wolverine. He isn't just an X-man character, isn't just a mutant...he is THE X-Man. He is the guy, the face, the core, the anchor to all of it. Arguably he is the most important comic book character ever written. And there is a long legacy in his claws.

And Hugh Jackman has taken up that legacy and brought Wolverine to life on the big screen in probably the best possible way. For 20 years this man has been The Wolverine, and granted the movies haven't always been great I would argue that Hugh has always brought the best out of old Logan. Even in the bad X-men movies, Hugh has full sold on the Wolverine and never betrayed the core of the character. Logan was a fantastic sendoff, a great R-rated way to let Hugh finally hang up the reigns and say goodbye to a superhero.

But Disney has deep pockets and he is back now. So fuck that honorable death and shit right?

I'm just messing with ya. Actually despite the whole "Wolverine's dead" thing, bringing the old fucker back was super easy, barely an inconvenience. Because this is the land of super heroes baby, multiverses, infinite timelines, and everyone knows that the only universe that matters is 616 aka the MCU. Deadpool was a series of movies that was never supposed to exist, Wolverine Origins fucked all that time remember. However all that shit was owned by Fox and well now that Marvel has the rights again, it's time to go big or go woke and guess which way Marvel went.

So the basic jist of the film is that Logan and the X-Men films are in the same universe as Deadpool. But because alternate timelines don't tend to stick around long after the big heroes die, Deadpools universe is doomed because Logan is dead. Which means Deadpool and all his friends are soon to be dead, however the powers at Marvel want to offer Deadpool another shot and offer him a chance to hop from his universe to 616 and be a big important guy in the MCU's next phase, but in order to do that he has to let his universe and all his friends die. So instead he goes universe jumping to find another wolverine to be the "anchor person" in his universe so that his universe gets to live.

And thus the premise for the story. Cameos, 4th wall breaks, and a fuck load of fan service in the next two hours spells a wonderful film. Like the other Deadpool movies there is so much heart and love and passion for these characters that bleeds through everything in the movie. Most importantly the way they treat Hugh's legacy and his excellent work being Wolverine for 24 fucking years, holy shit. Nearly half his life he has been Logan and the character just fits him.

In the first paragraph I spoke about the 90's and the media that shaped my childhood and Deadpool/Wolverine seems to live in that 90's nostalgia for the super hero era. It's just a fun movie all the way through with a lot of care and attention to everything that makes these characters so special.

I really don't wanna spoil anything because if you liked X-men ever before, you have to see this movie it's a 10/10 for those of us who loved X-men97 (the original) and comic growing up. What really makes the film shine to me is that it's not just a tribute to Wolverine (because it absolutely is more about Wolverine than Deadpool in that respect), It's also an amazing tribute to the man who brought Wolverine to life for us, Hugh Jackman.
