Death Lurks Around Every Corner in New Dark Souls Screens

Not only will you die a lot on Dark Souls, but those deaths will be incredibly varied.

[gallery=389]

It's one thing to hear that Dark Souls is a hard game, but getting a sense of just how hard it is can sometimes be difficult. Thankfully, a new batch of screen shots from the game is helping to put things in context: Dark Souls is the kind of hard that involves spectral crimson ninjas laying in wait to ambush when you walk past, and zombie dragons the size of a house gobbling you up like an armored Twinkie.

The new screens show a mix of exploration and action. On the action side, Dark Wraiths - the red colored enemies that are actually other players - play a pretty prominent role, as do the walking dead. For the explorers among you, there's a look at a couple of the game's environments, like wandering around the rafters of what looks like a Cathedral, and an impossibly tall forest.

Dark Souls, with its zombie dragons, wraith ninjas, and enormous trees, comes out for PS3 and Xbox 360 on October 4th.

That does look really cool. Another game that makes me wish i had a PS3. Or an Xbox360.
But alas, i do not own neither of them.

Well, the Black Phantoms certainly look scary. Like everything else. It just wouldn't be a very accurate bundle of pictures if the vast majority of them didn't show something trying to kill you.

I actually don't think that is supposed to be a BP. Dark Souls is unrelated to Demons Souls (hence the whole "spiritual successor" thing). I think the PvP system in Dark Souls is going to be gravelords or something.

Just curious: in picture 10 we see what presumably is the player character in a coffin. Does this mean there is going to be some sort of stealth element where we can hide from enemies in things like coffins or closets?

......I'll let someone else come up with a joke for that one

Haven't been this psyched about a game for a long time. From Software really found their niche with Demon's Souls, and if this is even half as good then hell yes.

Not sure if you can use them for pve, but Black Phantoms Dark Wraiths can hide in them and ambush players.

*Looks at pic 9*

Oh god, why did they keep Firestorm? It made Demon's Souls boss fights too easy (1-2 shots for every boss expect False King and Flame Lurker). Well, I hope they at least nerfed it.

Even being the Demon's Souls spiritual successor, I really hope it can live up to the hype. All it has to do is keep the same gameplay that had me yelling obscenities at the Flamelurker late at night in my dorm room and I will be fine with it.

My last few purchases of sequels have just been a big bleh experience.

i was hoping for a picture of the drider that they hinted at a while ago. they seem to be keeping it secret so maybe it plays a large role

Yeah yeah ... very hard and punishing and all that... you know Demon's souls had more to it than just being difficult, yes? because whenever a I read something about this games goes along the lines of "duude, look how much you'll suffer, ain't it neat"?
Demon's souls was an extremely solid game, with great controls, a strong and innovative mutiplayer and a great artistic direction. "Hard" for it's own sake didn't make that game good, and I suspect that will be the case with this one too.
My issue with this is that I fear only emphasizing the often cheap difficulty might discourage a great deal of potential buyers of giving this great game a go.
That said, DS's difficulty was a little overhyped. If you advanced through the level carefully and timed your blocks and dodges you could go a long way. Probably the hardest (as in most annoying) part was getting killed by a boss and having to walk all the way there again, especially in Valley of Defilement, which felt like more of a time waster, than anything else.
Plus the AI was kinda broken too, so getting a hard enemy stuck somewhere and spamming arrows was always an option.

Hope they don't make it any easier. The guy in the demo could a lot of hits it seemed.

That being said the difficulty was only part of the fun. The controls and most importantly the multiplayer was what made me come back again and again.

If they can clean up the artistic direction a bit, include more random stat items and keep most of what made it great then we're all in for a treat.

i dont think ill give dark souls a try. i got demon souls about a month ago and at first the difficulty was refreshing and it made me change up the way i play and yadadada all that shit every one else says about the game.

my problem is there was only one time i got off demon souls feeling good. thats when i beat my first arch demon some 30 hours in. every other time got off. i was just depressed at the fact i spent 2 hours for nothing. (dont give me that they are games you get nothing out of them any ways argument because thats like saying a book doesnt litterly give you anything but you still take something from it.)

who knows maybe if i hear it got rid of the "cheap difficulty" then ill check it out. learning to fight every monster one way and if you try anything diffrent you die is not hard thats cheap
