Maybe it's 'cos I am a too liberal with this kind of junk but what exactly in death note is dark DARK? Some kid finds a book, starts laying people out due to some god complex, some Sherlock Holmes guy tries to stop him, they start playing a grand scheming chess match with each other and things conclude how they conclude (avoiding spoilers).

It's not like the original oldboy or human centipede, where it is just gross out and perverted ... in all honesty I would expect kids to lose interest, due to lack of spirit bombs and mega awesome fights! I think I would rather my kid watch death note, than say Tokyo ghoul ... which again isn't even that bad.
That was my first thought as well, most of the deaths are just heart attacks, the two main leads are pretty much asexual and there isnt even any heavy swearing in it

That's all well and good....BUT WILL THERE BE POTATO CHIPS?!?! O.O
Yeah, there had better be some EPIC POTATO CHIP ACTION.
Seriously, I'll consider any live adaptation to be an utter failure unless it contains this exact scene with this exact cinematography and this exact music:

Everyone's promising an R rating these days, even for the shit I didn't ask for, like this, which is also a movie that I don't think anyone asked for. "For adults" The hell? Death Note was never really aimed at adults in the first place, it was aimed at young teens. At the end of the day, it's a story that could easily be told with a PG-13 rating. But then again, we're talking about cramming an entire anime, of which only one half is good, into what will likely be a two hour movie, so I'm not holding my breath on it being good, Rated-R or not.

If Ghost in the Shell promises the same thing that'll be different - since that story is extremely violent and would benefit from the R rating.

I'm curious as to what exactly they'll bring to the table. I'm still worried though, considering this is an american adaptation.
America (aka Hollywood) couldn't do a good adoption of another nations movie/TV series if their lives depended on it. Just have to look at what happened to Thomas the tank engine and friends after HiT good their hands on it and turned it into CGI toy marketing series (previously it was a good british series)

Exactly why I'm worried. We have the very rare diamond in the coal, but I know that most American producers can't grasp subtleties even if they tried and even though Death Note had some rather silly moments that tried to look serious (such as the previously mentioned potato chip scene), in the end, Death Note was a series about subtleties and high tension. I'm almost certain one of two things will happen with this adaptation: Either it will become Final Destination with someone other than death itself pulling the strings or it will become an awful and extremely hard attempt to try emulate the series so closely, it will seem inferior and lifeless. Either way it will be a disappointment.

So what's going to make this movie suck more? The lack of understanding of the source material? The unnecessary R-Rating following the trend Deadpool set in showing R-rated things are "surprisingly" popular, which was the wrong lesson to take from that movie anyway? Or will it be the Last Airbender failure of shoving too much of the plot into a single movie and not realizing such a feat is actually fucking impossible? Course, it could fail on all fronts, which would be some kind if special there.

I'm not opposed to live-action Death Note, good series. But its not necessary. And even if it was, the r-rating isn't warranted because it wasn't gory, violence, or even sexual in nature and adding more titillating stuff to it for no reason seems like a dumb idea since that's basically adding filler to a movie that's already going to struggle for time in how it'll fit the story into a single movie (unless they're opting for some kind of trilogy).

I eagerly await the product tie ins
And then I'll pull out a Dorito...AND EAT IT! Then I'll open my Mt. Dew...AND DRINK IT! Then I'll turn on my XBox...AND PLAY IT! Then I'll get into my Ford car...AND DRIVE IT!
"And that hippie that I will test my Death Note on will take his bunt... AND TOKE IT!!!"

OT: My chips are ready... as long as they take inspirations from the second live-action Death Note movie... :p

Other than that, at least this movie can get away with more than one verbal "fuck" in the dialogue... besides [REDACTED] saying "You mother fucker!" before dying at the hands of the OTHER Death Note... (Spoiler alert...)
