Why are people so obsessed with sequels? Why can't a good game come out, people appreciate it, and then move on? Shadow of the Colossus didn't have a sequel (it was a spiritual successor to Ico, sure). But that's an old game. The industry seems intent on milking the crap out of something the moment they realise people like it and will buy it.
In this day and age where numerous things can be added through simple patches, why do we really even need sequels?
That's a good point. They start working on a sequel as soon as their game has gotten popular, instead of improving on it. Wasn't there a time when a sequel
was an improved version of the original? If they didn't start working on a sequel the same year their game was released, maybe then they'd know from feedback what to improve on. Most sequels today might as well have been an expansion, instead of spending time on updating the graphics and change a few things here and there.
It's really a shame with all the impressive engines that are out there, they make one game with it, and start working on the next engine (The Source engine being the only real exception). I'd love to see some more games using the CryEngine, or Red Faction Guerilla's.
