Despite Some Claims, Blizzard Says that Overwatch Loot Box Drop Rates Haven't Changed

//cdn.themis-media.com/media/global/images/library/deriv/1382/1382450.jpgThere's been a bit of an uproar over the drop rates in Overwatch's Year of the Rooster event, but Blizzard says there have been no changes.

If you've been following Overwatch's Year of the Rooster event, you may have heard the rumors that are circulating about the drop rates in loot boxes. Specifically, there are users claiming that they've received significantly less skins and legendaries in this event than in past events.

There have been a couple of articles posted on this, both of which attempted to analyze the drop rates and compare them to past events. This PCGamesN [http://www.forbes.com/sites/insertcoin/2017/01/24/i-opened-100-year-of-the-rooster-loot-boxes-in-overwatch-and-heres-what-i-got/#5e9e181b1075] instead watched boxes opened by several streamers and followed the results in this and previous events, and found that the drop rates varied from event to event. Neither utilized large sample sizes, making both results somewhat questionable.

After a number of posts in wrote [https://us.battle.net/forums/en/overwatch/topic/20753106825],

"The drop rates for Summer Games, Halloween Terror, Winter Wonderland and Year of the Rooster are all the same."

Blizzard has never disclosed the drop rates for the loot boxes, but it may soon be forced to do so, at least in China. Back in December, there were reports [http://www.pcgamer.com/chinese-law-will-force-game-makers-to-reveal-loot-box-drop-rates/] of a new regulation coming to China in May 2017 that would require the drop rates in any game that features a loot box system to be made public, at least in China. That may or not spread, but you can bet that we will know what that drop rate is, at the very least.

As to the Overwatch Year of the Rooster event, it sounds like there were some unlucky folks and some lucky ones, just as you'd expect when you're dealing with random loot. If you played the event and opened loot boxes, how did you do? Let us know in the forums!

I've been playing really consistently over the past few months (an hour or two about 3 nights a week). For the Rooster event I got several special skins (both of Mei's, Zenyatta, Tracer, Symmetra and Bastion), while during the Halloween and Christmas events I only got 1 in each (Zenyatta and Lucio, respectively).

So yeah I don't believe that the rates have changed (other than possibly being more generous for the Rooster event).

Oh well.

Basic statistics courses should be mandatory at the high school level. It'd be more generally useful than Trig.

I accrued about 40 boxes in this event and got 5 legendaries from the boxes, 4 in the event and one non event. Sounds fine to me. Infact the purple epic items seemed to drop more frequently than usual if I noticed anything off with my gains in game.

I opened 61 loot boxes during the event and can't even remember my totals. I'd guess at least 6 or 7 legendaries at least though, because the only legendary event skins I didn't get were one of Mei's and Winston's

I only got the two legendary Mei skins during the event, but I didn't play all that much so that doesn't mean much.
A friend of mine got the Roadhog and D.Va legendaries within two days of the event launching though, so from that I'd assume the drop rates are just as chance-based as ever.

I opened about 35 loot boxes in this event in total.
Looking back at the overall it didn't differ as much from the previous events but I did seemto get a lot more loot boxes that contained only sprays and player icons. I distinctly remember those because I hate the fecking player icons, don't mind the sprays but coupled with player icons and nothing else in a loot box... just kinda sucks.

Honestly though... who gives a bloody toss about the player icons? really?

Well, they guarantee a Rare drop every box, so they pad out the drop count so you can't reliably get a skin or victory pose you might want.

I've tried to get stuff in every event and I haven't noticed any real differences in drop rate. I think it's just unlucky players getting frustrated, especially since most loot boxes just have nothing but trash in them. Being one of those unlucky players during the Summer Event (THE STUPID MCCREE SKIN AGAIN) I have a good amount of sympathy for them, but changing it so you can buy it with currency cuts down on that a lot. We've basically had three major events in quick succession, which also leads people to be frustrated because they only have so much gold.

Played a very min. amount in this last event and got 3 legends. Not sure what the problem is.

Sounds to me like people just bitching because they didn't get the (fill in the blank) that they wanted. I didn't get all the legendaries, but I got enough for me to be convinced that the notion that the droprates were lessened is a bunch of hogwash.

Meh, I haven't noticed any difference. It's still just as stingy as it ever was with the legendary drops.
