So it's kind of a red flag for me when a platform exclusive releases for free under PS+, though it really shouldn't because Microsoft is basically doing that same thing with everything they are (eventually) releasing....wait *looks at The Medium* okay I'm worried.

Anyway Destruction Allstars is out and it's a destruction derby, hero-driver, battle-royal game. All taking place in a Rocket-league style arena. You pick your driver of which there are about 12 different drivers that all have their own driving and on-foot abilities. The basic gameplay takes place in two different ways, cars will be litered about the arena some appearing after a certain amount of time or a certain number of other cars explode, and you run on-foot to get them.

While on foot the game has various platforms all over the place that either lead to stronger cars places off the arena floor, or you collect these gems that power up your character's specials. While driving you zip around trying to ram other cars and other on-foot players. However while driving you can actually use the momentum of the car's speed to jump out of the car and launch your character to higher and harder to reach platforms if you do it right. Geting in and out of cars constantly seems to be what the developers want you to do, but I rarely did it and I rarely saw other players doing it. Only getting out of the car to grab a better car, or run because my current car was about to die.

On paper it should be a lot of fun. The driving works, and the cars not only feel fast and easy to handle, but ramming other cars has a delightful impact to it that feels good to pull off. Also the cars for the most part feel fair, while some cars are "technically" better, none of the cars will outclass any other car completely. You'll always be able to catch up to a player in a car somehow, the arena bending in such a way that you can cut off faster cars to still have a shot of dealing big hits while in a slower heavier car.

The problem comes from the fact that the character abilities don't seem to matter and people appeared to pick the same people over and over again and I never really got the sense that playing a different character would have any real impact on the game. Also the arena is actually rather small considering how fast your cars can go, on foot the arena is large, but a car it feels too tight and it makes people feel clustered together constantly which makes it just feel messy.

Also the game tries way too hard to be cool. It has dreams of being full of style and awesome, but it just comes across like a mess. The visual design really feels like it's trying too hard to be zany and more appealing to the Fortnite players, and it just doesn't feel genuine. But that's kind of a personal feeling i guess, you might like the style but I think it's fucking obnoxious.

Overall the game feels okay, but Rocket League and Fortnite already exist and they are both better games.....probably I've never played either of them.
