Deus Ex: Human Revolution Dev Says Running and Gunning Won't Work

You can shoot your way through the new Deus Ex game, but you've got to be smart about it.

If you try to play Deus Ex: Human Revolution [http://www.amazon.com/Deus-Ex-Human-Revolution-Xbox-360/dp/B002I0JA7E/ref=sr_1_1?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1313164223&sr=1-1] like it was Call of Duty, you're going to find yourself very quickly riddled with bullets. That's the message from developer Eidos Montreal, who says that the game is more about tactics than mindless shooting.

Game director Jean-Francois Dugas said that shooting your way through the game was an entirely valid way to play the game, although he noted that it was only the tip of the iceberg in terms of what the game had to offer. But it would still be important for players to think about how they approached fights, he explained, which in turn would hopefully encourage them to try tactics other than just filling the air with lead.

"If you run and shoot like a headless chicken, you're going to get your ass kicked and you'll have a tough time," Dugas said. "If you plan accordingly and examine your enemies you'll start to go beyond the direct path and look at alternate things in the game. As you do that, you may stumble across something that alludes to the richness the game has to offer."

While Dugas seems happy with it now, he admitted that getting the balance and difficulty right had taken a lot of work. Early versions of the game, he said, had been too easy, and playtesters had been breezing through the game as if it was a regular shooter. After tweaking and retuning the game, Eidos Montreal found that people would tend to try to play the game like a shooter, get killed a few time, and then start exploring other options.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution comes out for PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 on August 23rd.

Got it pre-ordered.. Just not that excited :(.. Still will probably be a massively good game. Though the only way i see you can play this game is stealth, dunno why.. Shooting just feels bad in that kinda game.. Like MGS4..

Wasn't the same thing possible in the first one?
In fact I did it the first time and found it very easy.

Well I think that's being a little unfair to CoD. Any difficulty above recruit and your going to get your ass kicked if all you do is spray and pray.

Music to mine ears.

Okay, okay, so it might be bullshit, but hey, at least he's making the right noises.

Except the ridiculously tedious higher difficulty modes, CoD is a popamole where you use your gun to extinguish enemies instead of a hammer.

From what I've heard it seems Jensen dies REALLY fast if you get in a fire fight(Like 2 shots). So it looks like if you're going to do the shooting route you have to really utilize cover and use the best path of attack. I'll probably being going a mix of stealth/social options for my first playthrough.

I'm gonna hack and sneak my way through the game in my first playthrough. And I will do it non-lethal.

Love this news. I honestly got bored of shooters after Black Ops and Crysis 2 failed to impress me after the shiny graphics wore off. Deus Ex HR sounds like a step in the right direction.

Why do I have the feeling that post release, there's going to ba a lot of whining to the tune of "Wah! Game is too hard! I can't run and gun! it suck!"

.....Please prove me wrong, internet. Pleaaaaase prove me wrong...

I wonder if it'll keep track of whether you're a lethal or non-lethal type of person like the first one did.

Tactical shooting will probably amount to the same as the first one, drawing enemies into areas where you can hit em all with a grenade or pop out from behind cover and spray em down real quick.

I really hope non-lethals get more than a stun stick and a tranq crossbow, and if that's still all they give us I hope they at least make the ammo more common than 4 leaf clovers in central africa.

Yeah, same here. Probably gonna be a walking munition depot by the end of the game if I play it right.

I probably WILL take down drones that I was unable to hack....if I can't avoid them and they get annoying.

EDIT: I wonder how fast Jensen dies in a gunfight on the highest difficulty setting.

Because you haven't played the leaked demo.

Got my preorder locked in. Replaying the original Deus Ex in the meantime. This is going to be a good month for gaming.
