It's more polished and more cinematic. Deus Ex was a bit of a train wreck in both departments back in the day.

Deus Ex had a more genuine feeling of freedom. HR gives you quite a bit of flexibility by genre standards, but the original was unprecedented. The terrible AI in the original game also allowed for looser experimentation.

I'd say HR is more of a cross between the original game and Alpha Protocol. It's different enough from Deus Ex that I don't really feel comfortable making a direct comparison between them.

I'm a huge fan of the original, but honestly.. I just don't know.

I love Human Revolution, and right now I'd put them at right about equal over all, with each having some advantages over the other.

I'll be able to tell you definitively about 5 years from now, when I hear someone say "Deus Ex", my thoughts will either be:

1. As they are now, "Oooh, its been so long since I got to wander around liberty island whacking people with my baton. Now, to find my reinstall file.."

or

2. "Oh man, I would love to shoulder-blade a pair of dudes with my stealth system, now, where did I leave my steam account password at.."

If it is the first, then I'll say Deus Ex 1 remains king. If it's the second, then Human Revolution officially deposes it. If I have both thoughts.. well, I dunno then. My head will explode? I will say this for HR: I don't think any development team today could have feasibly done a better job than Eidos Montreal did.

I will update this post in 5 years with my results.

I'd say yes. The original has aged horribly. And I am aware there is an HD mod for it, I was not just talking about the graphics. Just the general combat, stealth and overall gameplay mechanics just feel clunky and outdated to me. Maybe it's just because I haven't gotten to "the good part" yet, but I think three attempts to get to "the good part" before quitting due to a general feeling of "meh" is enough for me.

Haha, same here. I've tried to play the game at least 5 times, starting a new file each time, but I always get bored before ever reaching the "good part". I guess it's partly because I end up wishing I had gone a different build every time I reach a Lv 5 lock or something, but I always found myself struggling to pay attention and push forward.

I can't give a fair comparison because I've never played the original game through, but I'd rather play HR over the original, just because it's so dated.

I think the first was better and more balanced. Comparing them, of course, to my first impressions of the first time I played them.
