At first, I was going to complain about all the games that we heard so little from. But then I asked myself, "why limit yourself?" So here we go; Things that I found to be cool, things that were bad, and the things that were just ugly. I will be taking the whole showcases into consideration, and not the individual game annoucements and gameplays.
Please remember that these were the shows that I watched. If you don't see the one that you were looking for, that means I didn't watch it and therefore don't have opinion on it
The Good: Sony and Devolver Digital
Sony's PS5 reveal was pretty much their e3 showcase, considering all the games that the console will support after launch. It had a bit of weak opening with GTA V port, but other than that the announcements were simply amazing. Sackboy, Ratchet and Clank, new Horizon game. Miles Morales, and of course, Demon's Souls Remastered. I feel like I was going ape shit crazy when I saw that giant eagle carrying the body
Devolver Digital showcase was hilarious af, and all the satire jokes just worked. Plus, all the games they showed were genuinely interesting.
The Bad: Microsoft and Ubisoft
It's been almost two years since I left Xbox. I was wondering what they had in store to convince me to buy their next-gen consoles. But as some of you read by Xbox showcase post, I wasn't really impressed. Halo Infinite, the game that was supposed to be the flagship for Xbox series X, wasn't all that impressive. There were so man teaser trailers and not enough gameplays, and the little gameplay they had looked just alright.
I changed what I said in my Ubisoft forward 20202 thread; It sucked. The two big games they had, Watch_Dog Legion and AC Vahalla look great graphics-wise, but I am willing to bet the rest will suck. The other games they showed were too big of a deal either. There was Far Cry 6, but there was no gameplay
The Ugly: EA and PC games show
EA PLAY's virtue signaling for Sims 4 alone has earned itself to be on my ugly list. The only two games that got my interest was SW Squadron and Lost in Random. Everything else was either "coming to steam" announcement or a free content update. NOTHING FOR Dragon Age, Mass Effect, Anthem 2.0, or Battlefield. And of course, we gotta have the EA Sports games. Who doesn't love the microtransactions and gambling-filled sports games? Oh I'm sorry, I meant ethical surprise mechanics.
The PC games show was so trash. The scripted banters were unfunny, and I had no idea wtf was the focus was when it came to gaming.
Special Mention: IGN'S Expo and Guerilla Collective
In case you didn't know, IGN had their own E3 show in the course of a few days. This was definitely weird, because just like with PC Games Show I had no idea what their focus was. One moment they are presenting gameplays for Cyberpunk 2077 and Baldur's Gate 3, and in the next moment they are having dnd session or podcasts.
Most of the games presented were indie games. Now I am not against indie games, and I do appreciate these small teams creating something big especially during this pandemic. However, none of them really managed to capture me.
