HOLY CANADA! (I wanted to say that for a while).
Unfortunately I lack a PC so I told my roommate about it (even though he isn't interested in any of those games :/)

Y'know, I should dig my copy of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. out and see if it actually works on this laptop.

It's unfortunate, but due to using a laptop (that is essentially not a gaming laptop), I'm restricted from getting "latest and greatest". Still, I got Riddick and Bioshock on console which run fine, no hiccups, and have no interest in Saint's Row 2.

Serious Sam? Now THAT is a good buy.

Now I'm just curious if I should grab a second. Missed out on the entire Thief series, and I hear Deadly Shadows is lame in comparison. Should I bother with it? Haven't beaten all of the first Max Payne and am not too interested overall. Should I give the second one a go nonetheless? I found nothing special in the console versions of FarCry. Should I give the original a go? What about Call of Juarez? What is this Tachyons game?

Hrm...

I already own most of these (thanks to Steam and cheap deals) or don't care about the titles in question. Not to mention I'd heard funky things about Saint's Row 2 on the PC, and I need to save my cash for Arkham Asylum.

YAY! Now I may finally have my Bioshock back!

That's if I can work on my laptop, though....Can't wait to see what the RPG week has.
*Crosses fingers for Fallout-related games*

Having done this (I got Bioshock, Thief, and Stalker), I will say this.

If it hadn't been 5 dollars, I would've been fed up. Steam is completly superior. I downloaded this game and was required to open up the zip file and run the _setup executable myself, then following install create my own shortcuts. After this i noted the game was only version 1.0, searched for patches, did indeed find one and installed it. 2 hours of frustration later I figured out it was the patch completly borking the game and tried the autopatcher I found in the zip file. Guess what?

NO CD FOUND NAH NAH.

They just rip the files directly from the disc (you can't even just mount it with Daemon tools, I tried) and spit them at you. I'll play the game unpatched and missout on a few tonics. I still got my 360 version. If stalker comes unpatched, this is going to be HELL.

In short, D2D sucks. Use steam.

edit: I found access to a special seperate page on the D2D page that takes you to their digital distribution patches. Still alot of hassle.

double edit: patching bioshock with their digital distribute patch seems to have been effective.

Triple Edit: Worked like a charm. They even have all the Stalker Patches (even the unofficial 1.0006) here https://www.direct2drive.com/patches/ it's disorganize so you'll have to scroll and look carefully.

If I had been a novice, I think this would've been a nightmare.

My countinue shitty experiance trying to patch these games (one of the stalker patches borked me, I had to find another one...) and just trying to install thief tells me DO NOT USE D2D UNLESS YOUR ONLY PAYING 5 DOLLARS. Steam kicks the SHIT out of it.

I just soiled mah pants.
If you have a fast computer, download the Stalker Complete 2009 mod. It doesn't change the gameplay, but my god it makes the game beautiful.

Oh man those are some great deals. But who oh why do they have regional restrictions on all of them? ;_;

Oh wait, I guess not all of them! Thief seems to be available for purchase, I think I'll go buy that.

If you havew Vista, DON'T! Can't even install or run it. And yes I disabled UAC, ran as administator in compat. mode. No dice. Possibly attempting to patch it borked me.

See, D2D claims to have patched its games for you. This is a lie. Also, if you have problems with your games, once you have them installed/have used the activation code, d2d whipes it's hands of you. They don't care, their EULA has been fufilled.

Wombats guide to buying Stalker, Bioshock, and Thief 3 from D2D:

First- can you afford to buy these games on steam? If so, do so. Steam is 5x better. Moving on...

Stalker: Shadow of Chernobyl: First ignore most of the patches on the d2d page. Download and install the game. Then install the 1.0001 patch off the D2D patches page (lower lefthand frame). Ignore the 1.0001 - 1.0006 patch, it borks your game. Instead go to fileplanet and get the 1.0005 patch (1.0006 is a multiplayer patch, I dunno how to get a working 1.0006 for digital distribute and don't care).

http://www.fileplanet.com/180143/180000/fileinfo/STALKER:-Shadow-of-Chernobyl-Patch-1.0005-[Digital-Distribution]

Make sure it's the DIGITAL DISTRIBUTION patch or it'll bork your game. Install patchez. Then, before you bother, go and get Stalker: Shadow of Chernobyl Complete 2009 mod, which makes a ton of UI, HUD, and graphics improvements to the game, kicking it from Halflife graphics to Oblivion.

ElArabDeMagnifico: Baha! There's the culprit!
ElArabDeMagnifico: Float 32 mod
ElArabDeMagnifico: I uninstalled it, then reinstalled complete 09
TsunamiWombat: ?
TsunamiWombat: Float 32?
ElArabDeMagnifico: Float 32 is an old one
ElArabDeMagnifico: redid some shaders, and improved performance and framerate by about...
ElArabDeMagnifico: 30-40%
TsunamiWombat: Ah
TsunamiWombat: well you don't need that naugh do you
TsunamiWombat: Since 09 uses that mod
TsunamiWombat: er
TsunamiWombat: since it redoes the data folder
TsunamiWombat: that probably is the problem
TsunamiWombat: since float 32 would be modifying the original data
TsunamiWombat: it wouldn't compute with the new shader information in 09
ElArabDeMagnifico: ok loading times are insane but I think it's because everyone IM'ed me at once during loading
ElArabDeMagnifico: and also
ElArabDeMagnifico: HOLY FUCKMOTHERING OMFG!
ElArabDeMagnifico: this is gorgeous
TsunamiWombat: yeah
TsunamiWombat: It takes it from Halflife to Oblivion
ElArabDeMagnifico: even the UI is awesome
TsunamiWombat: mhm
ElArabDeMagnifico: oh hey
ElArabDeMagnifico: the sleeping mod is in this
TsunamiWombat: yeah
TsunamiWombat: though i've yet to been required to sleep
ElArabDeMagnifico: wow dude even the artifacts look different, this is excellent
TsunamiWombat: I have haqd to eat
ElArabDeMagnifico: Yeah you even have to eat in the original
TsunamiWombat: and there's this weight limit'
TsunamiWombat: I dunno if that was in vanilla
TsunamiWombat: though you can only haul like 60 kg's of gear now
TsunamiWombat: or your energy burns 2x as fast, and decreases while walking
ElArabDeMagnifico: You could only haul 50 in vanilla IIRC
ElArabDeMagnifico: what about all my endurance artifacts?
ElArabDeMagnifico: I mean, I can run FOREVER with those on
TsunamiWombat: uhh dunno, maybe it's related to needing to sleep
ElArabDeMagnifico: while I was carrying 3 suits of armor and two guns lol
TsunamiWombat: i've only done it once
TsunamiWombat: keep in mind
TsunamiWombat: I have a shit ton of ammo
TsunamiWombat: and 3 guns
TsunamiWombat: 1 pistol 1 sawedoff and an ak47 su
ElArabDeMagnifico: Go find electric artifacts
ElArabDeMagnifico: like flash, moonlight, and sparkler
TsunamiWombat: I just started the game man
ElArabDeMagnifico: those make ya run forever
TsunamiWombat: Just got to Garbage
ElArabDeMagnifico: yeah I know
ElArabDeMagnifico: perfect, you can find electric anomalies soon
ElArabDeMagnifico: My advice is to ditch the sawn off if you are using the AK the most
TsunamiWombat: I only have like 100 rounds of AK Ammo
TsunamiWombat: and 300 shotgun
ElArabDeMagnifico: haha yeah
ElArabDeMagnifico: hold on a sec
ElArabDeMagnifico: let me find you a repair mod
ElArabDeMagnifico: barkeep and sidrovich can repair your equpiment
TsunamiWombat: guns are plentiful like the rain
TsunamiWombat: why use a repair mod?
ElArabDeMagnifico: because you want a gun in good condition so it's accurate
TsunamiWombat: My real limiter with now is Ammo
TsunamiWombat: but I killed those military dicks by the bridge
TsunamiWombat: so I took THEIR guns and ammo
TsunamiWombat: hence the AK47su
ElArabDeMagnifico: yeah, then repair it and your AK74 su (or is it 47?) will be much more accurate
ElArabDeMagnifico: and also
ElArabDeMagnifico: ARMOR
ElArabDeMagnifico: armor is very hard to find a spare of
TsunamiWombat: it's the SU
TsunamiWombat: it's the sub machinegun one
TsunamiWombat: you can tell because of the shortened profile and elongated sickle clip
ElArabDeMagnifico: yeah but read the name for me
ElArabDeMagnifico: does it say 47 or 74?
TsunamiWombat: uhh.. i'd hav e to check
ElArabDeMagnifico: oh yeah
ElArabDeMagnifico: you aren't in game
ElArabDeMagnifico: hurr durr
ElArabDeMagnifico: (to me, not you)
ElArabDeMagnifico: OMG
ElArabDeMagnifico: I just zoomed in with my rifle
ElArabDeMagnifico: and I just noticed the new scope
ElArabDeMagnifico: Dude, thanks for telling me about this mod
http://www.moddb.com/mods/stalker-complete-2009/news/stalker-complete-2009-release

Install this mod by unzipping it with winrar, then cut paste the contents to your base Stalker folder, ala program files/THQ/Stalker - Shadow of Chernobyl. Replace all files. Also read the readme file if you wish to take step 3 and do some optional tinkering to max your graphical pleasure, like so

3. In the "user.ltx" file change gloss factor to 2.5:

r2_gloss_factor 2.5

- to find "user.ltx", XP users go to:
"C:/Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\stalker-shoc\user.ltx"

- Vista/Win7 users just type "stalker-shoc" in Windows Explorer search or go to:
"C:\Users\Public\Documents\stalker-shoc\user.ltx"

- Steam users go to "steam\steamapps\common\stalker shadow of chernobyl\_appdata_" if I'm not mistaken.

The 3rd step is optional but recommended, since textures were designed with those settings. Make sure you backup your original "user.ltx" before making changes.

Then update this mod by downloading the Patch

http://www.moddb.com/mods/stalker-complete-2009/downloads/stalker-complete-2009

By repeating the above process- unzip, cut paste, replace all. Launch the game and enjoy. oh yes, Enjoy.

Bioshock: By comparison, Bioshock is much easier to run. Download Bioshock and install and run the authentication process, then install the patch from D2D (1.1 I believe). Thats all.

Thief 3: Won't run. Don't try. If you really have to try, disable UAC by following the instructions here.

http://www.petri.co.il/disable_uac_in_windows_vista.htm

Reboot, install thief 3. Run in compatability mode and/or administrator mode by right clicking and changing it under properties.

http://www.tweakguides.com/TDS_3.html

See this page for more Info, I gave up on that for now. And remember, it was only 5 Dollars. Don't get all frustrated like I did.

PS: Steam is better.

PPS: D2D is cheaper. By far. Convenience is sometimes not worth paying ?15 extra for. I'm running Win7 on a gaming laptop, and I've already got STALKER: SoC, and it runs like a charm. So far I like Clear Sky better, though. Thanks for the effort, anyway.

It's lovely how the Internet erased physical borders only to have slobbering morons build wholly artificial new ones within it.
