Discworld

I did a poll on DeviantArt and most people hadn't heard of Discworld. Oh, what a world we live in. Any fans out there?

As a child I watched Soul Music and the Wyrd Sisters cartoon, and I recently watched the films for The Colour of Magic and Hogfather. I'm now listening to the audio books...because I am lazy and don't trust myself to finish reading anything. Nigel Planer does a wonderful job with accents! I didn't recognise the actor till I checked google images and recognised him from an ep of Blackadder the Third. So far I've listened to:

I'll get to the rest. Some I will leave for the end, like the Tiffany Aching series. Once I'm done with Susan, I'll get to work on Sam Vimes.

I've got pretty much all of the books, Terry Pratchet is a good comedy fiction writer... "Interesting Times" is the funniest book of all time.

ALthough he's rubbish at creating well liked "female" characters, Angua's the only good girl he's managed to create, and she's a werewolf. Its like he's the Anti Joss Whedan.

Massive fan here, coming from a house where my mother owns a copy of pretty much every single one in paperback. I must admit, I still think The Colour of Magic and The Light Fantastic aren't as good as the rest, and it doesn't start getting really good till Mort. My favourites are probably the City Watch ones, though I do love Susan and Death and the Witches and...oh, pretty much all his characters XD

I love Mort but my favorite Pratchett book is called Good Omens which he co-authored with Neil Gaiman. I hadn't laughed like that in ages, awesome book!.

He and Iain (M.) Banks are my two favourite writers. His older books weren't that good, but the newer books are just awesome. "Thief of Time" is probably my favourite at the time. Gotta read "The Truth" soon.

Susan's extremely popular, isn't she?

I'm female and enjoyed the female characters I've encountered so far, especially with my reading so many of the Lancre coven books. Magrat is my favourite Discorld female, Susan second and Ysabell third.

Massive fan, got a number of his more recent books in hardback (since Nightwatch), read (I think) all his discworld books at least twice..

Night Watch is incredible, read it a whole bunch of times. But the whole city watch series is brilliant (see Jingo, particularly, for its very moving closing scenes)..

The two movies they've done are truly awesome as well, and really show how good a writer pratchett was - because he was heavily involved in the film-making process, and the characters are exactly as imagined (well, apart from david jason, but that was more a favour and a way of getting a high profile person onto the screen, and I can forgive that.. the casting of Susan is brilliant).

Pratchett's genius is to be wildly entertaining and lightweight, and at the same time to make incredibly pointed observations about life.

I gotta say ive never given the true diskworld series a fair try but i did love his Wee Free Men series and the entire series is about strong female characters and the only real men are pixies(ish).

See I love Susan, but owning up to the fact I love a character who is 16 years of age wears dark clothing and is the Grim Reaper by proxy probably says alot about me as a man... so I wouldn't admit that sort of shit to my family or anything.

Want my advice? Skip Vimes and go right into Rincewind. Rincewind is one of the most awesome characters I've ever read, at least as good as death and in some ways better. In combination (as they often are during Color of Magic) they create a comic/comic foil pair of such high caliber I've yet to see it matched in any other work of literature.

Rincewind is basically my hero.

Rincewind is awesome. I wasn't satisfied with his casting in the film. David Jason was too old and didn't capture the character well.

I've got a bunch of discworld books just sitting around. Every time I go to read them I get distracted by something stupid such as uni. Holidays now though, so I can read em good.

Pretty much exactly what I was going to post. It's my favourite book of the series, and a hot contender for favourite book in general.

I've read them all. Yes, I have read every single Discworld book to come out before chrismas 2008. Naturally I don't own them all, but libraries are such beautiful places....

What can I say, I like how Pratchett writes. He does botch things up every now and then (Thud! wasn't all that good, it wasn't Vimes at the best, and Making Money did not take advatange of the potential of the fairly new character, Mr. Moist Von Lipwick.) but overall he writes good books.

I also extremely strongly suggest reading the Nation, even though it is not a discworld novel. 'Nation' really is a book that makes you laugh and cry and it is among my favourite Pratchett books of all time.

Apart from the Rincewind-dominated books (I can't STAND that character!!) I love the Discworld series, and have every single book all lined up on my bookcase. I like Death, Vimes, Vetinari, Ridcully, The Dean, The Librarian, Granny Weatherwax, Nanny Ogg, Sybil and Susan.

Remember kids - "When Mr Safety Catch is not on, Mr Crossbow is not your friend" !!
