.....I kinda like what I am seeing.
But I have to see more to fully judge this. And I know for a fact that the abscence of Mushu, the Cricket, and Shang is gonna hurt.
Also are the "Huns" now properly reintroduced as the Mongols?
Agreed, seeing as Mulan is the only Disney princess with a body count in the thousands!Marik2 said:I just want to see this scene done in live action.
That's the reason I've always respected her. Her homeland is invaded, and she joins the military for the purpose of expelling the invaders. And she does so, with great effect.CrazyGirl17 said:So it's not going to be a straight up retelling of the animated movie? I know the last few remakes have been different, but it's still weird that certain elements are going to be left out though. At least this one still looks interesting.

And to keep her aging and clearly unfit father from going to the war to most likely die.CM156 said:That's the reason I've always respected her. From this trailer they do have the Avalanche sequence.Marik2 said:I just want to see this scene done in live action.
Seconding this. It's also one of the few that I'd say is a natural "live action" choice. Unlike a lot of Disney's films, Mulan never relied especially heavily on 'weird' elements that made animation a boon (eg: One of the main characters being a chimera, most of the cast being animals, etc). In Mulan, the 'weirdness' is almost entirely contained to Mushu and the Cricket, both of which could be easily cut. If you're going to make a live action adaptation of a Disney film, this is actually one of the better ones to try it with.Casual Shinji said:Out of all the Disney live-action remakes this one looks the most half decent. I like that the main protagonist doesn't look like the typical overly glamorous starlette that a Disney movie like this would usually have. She looks like she's from a working class family, and as someone who could actually pass for a young man without too much trouble.
Also, unlike the other Disney remakes, the cinematography doesn't make it seem like I'm looking at obvious sets.
I'm still not expecting this to be anything other than a flaccid retelling, but it's a solid first impression nonetheless.
Right. She doesn't do what her society thinks is the best thing to show respect to her father, but I think that most of us agree that her decision was correct. And again, good results.Samtemdo8 said:And to keep her aging and clearly unfit father from going to the war to most likely die.CM156 said:That's the reason I've always respected her. In one telling of the legend she went to war in her father?s place with his blessing because she beat him in a sword fight. I?m kind of hoping that version of events is in here.CM156 said:Right. Jet Li and ol' Donnie? Sign me up. This remake is the only one that looks interesting. I am curious as it is not a musical nor a shot for shot remake.Chimpzy said:Apparently Jet Li and Donnie Yen are in this. Now I wish this was a full on artsy wuxia movie alla Hero or House of Flying Daggers.
It's not going to be, and that's a bummer, but it's fine. I'll make one up in my head.
I actually did not know that. That's a pretty neat detail that I would love to see.Gordon_4 said:In one telling of the legend she went to war in her father?s place with his blessing because she beat him in a sword fight. Actually, there's a good reason for that [https://www.shenyunperformingarts.org/blog/view/article/e/QfDb-EMLzYk/asian-hairstyles-lifehack-ancient-chinese-haute-coiffure.html]Hawki said:What the hell Mulan? If you're going to disguise yourself as a man on the battlefield, cut your damn hair!
By now, you?ve probably noticed that all of the styles above require long hair. That?s no surprise?Confucian values in ancient China held that hair is a gift from the parents to be treated with utmost respect. For both men and women, haircuts were considered a serious breach of filial piety, only done under special circumstances. You could give a lock of your hair as a promise to your lover, for example, or shave your head entirely when entering a religious order. Prisoners and criminals had their hair cut and left to grow wild as a form of punishment, so unkempt hair became a sign of dishonorable ways.
Here's a quick summary of the old movie compared to the 1998 version. The older Mulan starts at 2:00CM156 said:I actually did not know that.
