.....I kinda like what I am seeing.

But I have to see more to fully judge this. And I know for a fact that the abscence of Mushu, the Cricket, and Shang is gonna hurt.

Also are the "Huns" now properly reintroduced as the Mongols?

Out of all the Disney live-action remakes this one looks the most half decent. I like that the main protagonist doesn't look like the typical overly glamorous starlette that a Disney movie like this would usually have. She looks like she's from a working class family, and as someone who could actually pass for a young man without too much trouble.

Also, unlike the other Disney remakes, the cinematography doesn't make it seem like I'm looking at obvious sets.

I'm still not expecting this to be anything other than a flaccid retelling, but it's a solid first impression nonetheless.

Apparently Jet Li and Donnie Yen are in this. Now I wish this was a full on artsy wuxia movie alla Hero or House of Flying Daggers.

It's not going to be, and that's a bummer, but it's fine. I'll make one up in my head.

I wonder if I had any strong feelings about these movies if they were remakes of Disney cartoons I actually care about. But there are no Disney cartoons I actually care about. I mean, there are some of their television shows I grew up with that I still hold dear but what are they gonna do, make a live action remake of Talespin? They don't even include that stuff in Kingdom Hearts.

So it's not going to be a straight up retelling of the animated movie? I know the last few remakes have been different, but it's still weird that certain elements are going to be left out though. At least this one still looks interesting.

Agreed, seeing as Mulan is the only Disney princess with a body count in the thousands!

That's the reason I've always respected her. Her homeland is invaded, and she joins the military for the purpose of expelling the invaders. And she does so, with great effect.

And to keep her aging and clearly unfit father from going to the war to most likely die.

Seconding this. It's also one of the few that I'd say is a natural "live action" choice. Unlike a lot of Disney's films, Mulan never relied especially heavily on 'weird' elements that made animation a boon (eg: One of the main characters being a chimera, most of the cast being animals, etc). In Mulan, the 'weirdness' is almost entirely contained to Mushu and the Cricket, both of which could be easily cut. If you're going to make a live action adaptation of a Disney film, this is actually one of the better ones to try it with.

I'm not entirely sold on the apparent Wuxia (maybe even Xianxia) direction, but as much as anything else, I chalk that up as much to it simply being a major difference from the film I know.

Right. She doesn't do what her society thinks is the best thing to show respect to her father, but I think that most of us agree that her decision was correct. And again, good results.

In one telling of the legend she went to war in her father?s place with his blessing because she beat him in a sword fight. I?m kind of hoping that version of events is in here.

Jet Li and ol' Donnie? Sign me up. This remake is the only one that looks interesting. I am curious as it is not a musical nor a shot for shot remake.

What the hell Mulan? If you're going to disguise yourself as a man on the battlefield, cut your damn hair!

Anyway, looks okay. Never seen the original, so can't compare on that front. On the other hand, another Disney live-action remake, so...

Anyway, be a man, something something...

I actually did not know that. That's a pretty neat detail that I would love to see.

Actually, there's a good reason for that [https://www.shenyunperformingarts.org/blog/view/article/e/QfDb-EMLzYk/asian-hairstyles-lifehack-ancient-chinese-haute-coiffure.html]

By now, you?ve probably noticed that all of the styles above require long hair. That?s no surprise?Confucian values in ancient China held that hair is a gift from the parents to be treated with utmost respect. For both men and women, haircuts were considered a serious breach of filial piety, only done under special circumstances. You could give a lock of your hair as a promise to your lover, for example, or shave your head entirely when entering a religious order. Prisoners and criminals had their hair cut and left to grow wild as a form of punishment, so unkempt hair became a sign of dishonorable ways.

I find it deeply problematic. The story of Mulan is set in the Han era of ancient China, circa 220BC-220AD. Yet looking at the IMDB of the 2020 sham Mulan movie, the star Liu Yifei was born in 1987. How am I supposed to identify with the character of Mulan if this actress does not represent what a feudal Chinese woman would have been? How could she possibly play the role without having lived the life? For shame I say.
What about jobs for Chinese women born 1800 years ago, huh? How ageist is Hollywood?! #RealHansForRealHumans!

Also with that haircut I doubt you're as mysterious as the dark side of the moon. Also also the history of geodesy does not show ancient China had postulated that the earth was round, let alone the moon, to the extent they would know the moon does not rotate and therefore has a dark side they couldn't observe.

I have to scoff at all the people who are so pissed they just didn't make the live action movie exactly the goddamn same as the animated version. The animated Mulan exists. Its pretty damn good. What good would having it in live action do?

Apparently Chinese people have long taken issue with Mulan 1998. I mean, wouldn't you be pissed off if Disney stole on of your country's oldest legends and turned it into a musical with Eddie Murphy as an anthropomorphic mockery of a national symbol? It seems that they're attempting to adapt the actual legend this time, which I think was a good move.

My girlfriend recognized Mulan's wushu moves, which is cool. Made her overlook of her disappoint of having no bicurious General Shang.

Here's a quick summary of the old movie compared to the 1998 version. The older Mulan starts at 2:00
There is also a part 1 that compares Mulan to the orginal poem
