I think we all knew that which ever games that were picked no one was going to like them, thats just the way people are. It is strange that square enix is spotlighted so much. But I think that the once good name of SE has since been tarnished and in the west largely ignored. I have never been a fan of there land mark FF series and if they were not publishing Deus Ex: Human Revolution I would largely pay them no mind. But for those that are not that big into games they still all assume that Playstion is a Final Fantasy dominated machine. At least that is what I hear, oh how wrong they are.
I can agree. SE definately did put out one too many bad games to think the playerbase would be that forgiving (looking at you 13 and 14...)

But actually it's been a kind of humbling experience for them. Which is good in a way, maybe it means they will actually try and put forth better games from here on out. Every developer has to learn this lesson sooner or later. We gamers are fickle creatures.

Do you notice the trend? Three of those four titles were from Square! There are a few other examples. Blizzard has two games representing DOS/Windows, Daiblo II and Starcraft. Konami has Gradius V and Metal Gear Solid 2 representing the Playstation 2.

So, Escapists, what do you think? Does this show that some developers have those periods of true talent that mark them as such excellent studios that it goes to their heads? Do they become overconfident, believe that they can do no wrong, and create horrors? Do we come to expect too much from them, and anything that is less than perfect or better than previous work is perceived as garbage? Do they shine brightly for a brief moment and then burn out?
Big companies have made many huge hits in the past -> They got overconfident because all their present day works are clearly shit.

Evil Knievel could not make that jump.

I think you underestimate Evil Knievel. And me for that matter.

I'm created this thread due to the sheer amount of hate that I have seen for various developers out there. Seriously, create a thread about Square today. I'll guarantee you that at least 80% of the comments will be complaining about the various Final Fantasy and other games. Most of them will probably be about FFXIII and FFXII, but there will be the people that claim they never enjoyed FFVII or FFVIII, too. However, I bet if you asked anyone what they thought of Square back in '97, they couldn't praise them enough. I think it's interesting to note the change. And, its the same for other companies, too. *cough cough* Bioware Bungee *cough*

And you're kinda glossing over the sentence where I suggest it's all in our heads.

In the end, I think there is some truth that some developers are not as good as they used to be (Sonic Team), but I feel that it's too early to suggest that others' ships have sailed. I think a lot of this belief that various developers have let their fans down comes from the fans themselves. I'd bet that if those same people that dislike [insert game here] had never played [insert earlier game from the same developer; bonus points if its part of the same series] they would like it just fine. Its a perception. People want their favorite games to get better but still feel the same. When they don't do to some tweak, people lose their heads.
