Do "Nerds" Not Enjoy Sports, Or Just Not Mainstream Ones?

Yes. I have been a Steelers and Pirates fan my whole life. (Betcha can't guess where I grew up near.) NO and Seattle are two teams I enjoy watching during football season. Seattle and Baltimore are my go-to baseball teams during the season, but I try to watch as much as I can. I also golf and do watch it regularly. Used to skateboard when I was younger till my knees started hurting a lot. Still watch it on ESPN when it's on.
Jesus, are you some kind of baseball masochism? Pirates, Orioles, and Mariners? I'm a M's fan and that's about all I can handle, I can't imagine living through the last decade of general suck that has characterized all three of these teams.
Trust me it ain't easy =( Especially being a Pirates fan

The past couple years must've been especially hard, what with the constant tease of contending during the first half of the season...

I'm big on what you Americans call soccer, although I've stopped fanboying for the commercialised variant before I even hit my teens and an injury several years ago made me unable to play anymore.

I like snowboarding and windsurfing. Growing up in the UK those aren't exactly commonplace, though...
Went windysmurfsmurf today actually. Was awesomeballs. If slightly cold. Stupid UK winter!!!!

Me? I likes me some sailing, windsurfing, kayaking, canoeing, dragonboating, climbing, skiing... Can' stand watching sports though. If you enjoy it, go out and DO it, instead of watching someone else have the fun!! (Unless you're currently broken. Which sucks.)

I myself just hate watching sports, to me it's ***king boring. I do though enjoy playing basketball or football with a group of my friends.

I've been as sports fan and a gamer, for as long as I can remember. My Dad and older brother and cousins were always into sports so there's that, and I've been gaming since the 16 bit days, and collected comics books for a good amount of time, so I would say yes nerds do enjoy sports

I also noticed a certain "dislike" for sports from some of our "nerdy" brethren, and I always just assumed that was from years of being picked on and bullied by jocks, which in turn leads to the general sports dislike.

See living in the suburbs of NJ I usually had to deal with the asshole rich kids(some of which were on sports teams), while the rest of jocks, for the most part, were pretty down to earth, one of which was one of my best friends thru out high school. I can enjoy sports without feeling like I'm rooting for the douche-bag that made HS hell for me which I feel is the issue some have with sports.

I think spectating sports is a primarily social activity, supporting your team and bonding with the crowd, therefore social ineptitude certainly retards the ability to enjoy most mainstream team sports.

There's lots of strategy within sports, and a lot of scientific things which go into making a good athlete, like diet, psychology, the biology of exercise and fitness, the physics and biomechanics of the perfect drop-kick.

But there are a lot of other areas of science and technology, most areas of them aren't the above, so most nerds have other interests.
Was glad to see this discussion, cuz I've had it recently with guys I know, pondering why the disdain for sports is so common amongst geek culture. Good example was at the Escapist Expo when Jim Sterling said in panel that people that can write about sports games are like gold dust and to "name your price".

But anyway, OT. I disagree on the social thing cuz I have no problem talking with plenty of nerds, whom I have never met, about nerd stuff when I see they're into it. I like this post though cuz it shows what could make sports talk actually interesting for people like myself. Discussing these aspects of sports would be stimulating and interesting. Unfortunately it is NEVER the way these things go. Just talking about who traded to who, and who is playing who on Saturday and who doesn't have the defense and ZZZZZZZZ.

But this discussion showed me, for the most part, that mostly team sports and the commonly-encountered mentality, have this effect. Exactly why that is so prevalent is still something worth discussing though.

Ya'll get yer chance at pay back soon enough. I'm still thinking its a win for the saints though. I can't decide who I dislike more, roddy white or cam newton. Probably roddy, at least with cam its fun to watch him sulking on the sidelines like a baby when things aren't going his way.

Aye, and I'm taking shit right now from all my friends for having Colin Kaepernick as my starting fantasy QB this week. As much as I love my Saints, and hope the D does well, gotta call a spade when I see it.
