Do pop stars have any actual talent?

Name your music genre, and you know they write their own songs and music. Rock, Country, Even rap artists, which is more of a collaboration of efforts, write their own music. Though I'm not so sure about rap nowadays, as i haven't listened to any in the last 5 years. From what I hear its getting as bad as pop, but i could be mistaken.

Anyway, current pop stars seem to have no musical talent whatsoever. Yeah they can sing and look pretty, which is why pop stars exist, but who the hell writes their music? Lyrics don't count, as thats far easier than writing music.

As near as I can tell, its all written by music producers. Now its normal for them to help out a band to get a good sound, the AC/DC album "Black Ice" had assistance from their producer. But they write their own music and lyrics. Producers "Adjust" As you would say, and make sure they sound great while giving the band what they want. It would appear that music producers have figured they can just do it all themselves if they find the right singer that looks pretty.

Britney Spears has decent music. There, I said it. Now I don't know if she wrote any of it, but its still better than the whole "High School musical, Hannah Montana, Justin Bieber" Fiasco.....errrrr, fad.

Miley Cyrus, whom plays Hannah Montana, had this song from the movie Bolt nominated for best original song at the Globe Awards.

Yes, best original song. Sounds like a mix of country and pop. I don't think theres a single original note in there, the whole thing screams that it was another cut-and-paste song that they threw a little flair in it to make it appear different.

So what I'm asking is are there any pop stars that write their own music? Current ones, that is. I would then actually have some respect for them. Even copying other peoples music, like rap and pop stars have been doing for decades, shows a better use of talent. Hell Will Smith did it with his song "Men in Black"

I can't claim to know if pop stars write their own music or not, because I really don't know.

But they definitely have talent, or they wouldn't get to the level of fame (on infamy) they they get to.

Like most problems in life, this question can be answered with some applied math. There are approximately, a whole bunch of current popstars. The chances of none of them having musical talent is very, very low. Bruno Mars comes to mind. I also don't see how this is a "new" thing for pop music. Sinatra didn't write music or compose. The Beatles and Elvis were pop revolutionaries because they wrote music and lyrics.

To answer the question, the talented ones do in fact have talent. Wow thats like art or something....

Seriously, though your mad that Disney is turning out crappy pop? Thats what they do.

I cant stand any music person who does not write their own stuff. (Its why Im not a big fan of music from the late 40's-early 60's)
I give Keisha credit for atleast writing her own stuff...now if she would just write about something of meaning instead of about being trashy...

Of course they do. You may not like them, but anyone who says that an artist with millions of fans is talentless is talking out of their ass.

They probably do have at least SOME talent, be it singing, dancing, or writing. Marketability also comes to mind. And there's the power vacuum where if a spot is empty, many will try to fill it. Think about how many teeny-bopper pop stars have appeared in the last 3 years. Most of them can't actually sing. It's the only reason I don't inexplicably hate on the Biebz. Correction: I don't hate him because at least he tries to get himself involved in the process, rather than just taking the lyrics and belting them out.

Naturally, they have talent in some fields. Some more than others.

Lady Gaga's probably somewhere near the top of the heap, if not at the pinnacle...even if her pop work doesn't always match what she's actually capable of.

On the whole, country artists don't write their own music.

Well, REAL country artists do, but the current trend of pop-country artists do not. Chances are, if it's on a country station on the radio, the person performing did not write the song or music.

The ones that do write their own music are the classic country artists (and even that isn't always true), and the current generation of alt.country artists like Lucero, Drive-By Truckers, Ryan Adams, Icanlickanysonofabitchinthehouse, Drag the River, etc.
