If I remember correctly, since I haven't played a single FF game, no two games[footnote]Excluding FFX and FFX-2[/footnote] have any of the same characters, or locations, or any ties between stories. So each Final Fantasy game is its own game, not part of a series.

So no, if you just play FF2, you'll be totally fine.

Which FF2? The "north american" one or the REAL one? EXPLAIN!

Also, you do not.

All games in the main series are completely independent. There are some references in the later ones, but nothing more.

Doesn't matter. The "North American FF2" is never referred to by the number 2 EXCEPT on the North American SNES release (somewhat redundant as the game was never released in the PAL territories on that platform) - all other releases, including all North American versions on platforms other than the SNES are properly labeled as number 4. Ergo, any game bearing the name "Final Fantasy 2", unless it's an SNES cartridge (as opposed to an SFC cartidge), is some version of the actual second numbered game in the franchise.

Back on topic, since no numbered Final Fantasy is a direct sequel to any other, they don't need to be played in order.

Also, don't play FF2.

That's incredibly funny. No seriously, my sides are splitting from the hilarity and I fear I wet myself. This is the most unique joke I've heard all millennium.

"I played both, there hard in some cases."
"FF 2 was really good, a good story."

Each Final Fantasy game is completely separate from the others, unless it has a number and subtitle in it. So you'll be fine. I recommend not playing II on the principle that it's one of the worst of the series. If you've played others, then go right ahead and enjoy the look into the series' past, but not only is the first a better game, but you really should start with VI, VII, or X if you haven't played a Final Fantasy game yet.
