I've seen Spirited Away and have some decent writing skills. However I'm not that familiar with any of the other anime on the list. I mean I've seen a few episodes of FMA, and I've heard (but never seen) of Cowboy Bebop but don't know enough to actually write a sample review for them. Damn.

In that case, you can just write both of your reviews on Spirited Away. That's why we tried to pick a few well-known series & movies :)

I have a few questions.

1) Will the anime that's reviewed be predetermined? e.g. I can't choose to not review a given
anime. (mostly out of concern for fanservice titles)

2) If so, will the reviews consist of classic anime, such as in the application? Or newer titles?

3)Can minors participate?

4) What type of schedule are we looking at?
1.) Yes. We will be determining what we send you. Once we have our stable, it might be possible to work out if some prefer certain types of series to others (i.e., one person likes mecha, one person likes magical girl, so on and so forth), but this will be entirely at our discretion.

2.) Largely, newer titles. Of course, it depends on the releases - for instance, on my desk right now I have DBZ season 8 box set, Claymore Chapter 3, The Wallflower eps 1-13, and ... a bazillion others. It all depends on what we get sent.

3.) Yes - how minor? :p

4.) Monthly.

I take it when talking about format differences I'm guessing you're talking about the DVDs being region 1 (NTSC), if so surely that can be fixed with a region free dvd player or software that does something similar on PC?
Formatting isn't the only issue. It's very costly to ship things overseas, and there's a greater time delay.

I don't know if it's exactly difficult to buy the stuff on european websites and arrange the shipping like that... unless You guys get the stuff for free ;)
Funk and Susan did not adequately communicate the amount of anime that we receive. Here's a sneak peek into our office: (cellphone pic, sorry about the quality)

[image src=http://static.escapistmagazine.com/media/global/images/galleries/display/55/55654.jpg]

Those top shelves are two layers deep, all anime (third shelf is manga). There is enough there that the shelves are bowing under the weight. There is also more anime on other shelves elsewhere in the office. And more arriving regularly.

So we'd probably be sending it out from here, and not buying more :p
My god...it's a Japanophile's dream!

Is that the Inuyasha movie on the second shelf to the far right, stacked horizontally?

All I can say is.... Sucks to be NOT-American (that is to say, for this given moment only). Though I'm not saying being American sucks. Nor I am saying that being NOT-American sucks. In fact, just scratch that and forget I said anything :p

I'd hate to be the one in charge of reading all those sample reviews. You're bound to run into twice as much awful dreck with anime fans as you would with any other kind of reviewer.

1) just be careful when you send different people anime they "like" as you can get skewed reviews. ie. "This was good cause it was a shonen". On the other side of the fence you can get a "this was bad cause ti was a shonen". Also if an anime is particularly "bad" can a review be written without watching the entire series, or must it be completed to the end. (the only anime i never watched more than three episodes of was black blood brothers, couldn't stand it for some reason).

2) i wish you were doing this a few years ago. I wrote a killer review for code geass S1 and S2 as well as the a review on the effectiveness of the psychological aspects of death note and how they relate to live action thrillers. I'll see what i can come up with for some of these... (i am an avid down loader of anime, i always buy the anime after i watch it if i enjoyed the series, but i have seen a lot of the newer stuff from japan already. I am not certain where claymore chapter 3 starts off, but over all the first part of the anime adaptation of the manga was entertaining in the least.)

4) would it be like a constant release date? like every 1st Thursday of the month type of deal? Also how much ahead of the review would we have the anime to be able to watch?

5) Would each of the 5 reviewers be reviewing the same thing or each a different title? If it is each a different title is that so it can be spaced out across the month?

6) Does Canada count as North America in The Escapists books?... because some people say North America and when i tried to apply they said "Canada doesn't count."

Interesting prospect...too bad my writing style is, shall we say, interesting, and I only watch subbed anime (dubb1ng is 4 n00bz0rs!!!). Curses. Oh, well, I use Open office anyway, and I don't think I've written 750 contiguous words on the same subject in 2 or 3 years, so I'm probably a little rusty.

Question: I told my girlfriend about this and now she wants to join in; will both of us entering (or being selected) cause a problem?

I don't want both of us to be turned down because we're thought to be the same person (our addresses are the same), just using a pseudonym.

I'm going to go ahead and get in on this, mostly because I really need no excuse to get up and write, and this is a way to keep my writing regularly. Doesn't help that I tend to like anime and enjoy watching it.

I'll have my write-ups in eventually, though I have a few writing project deadlines descending in the more-or-less same instant. Consider me interested. Two questions:

1) As for the actual reviews, will they be spaced out about the same length as these two trials? If so, will we have to review large series in so few words, or will we handle the series one DVD/Boxset at a time?

2) If the regular reviewer is going to have a busy week, will they be able to request occasional spouts of shorter movies or boxes? (For example, reviewing a single Miazaki film would take less watching time than the complete boxset for R.O.D. the TV, and would be more conducive to a busy week's schedule.)

Shame, I was looking for an excuse to watch Spirited Away again, as well as start watching Cowboy Bebop. Naturally, they would be my choices, if I was American. Oh well.

It doesn't matter, I'm still writing my Guest Review (Sorry Susan, I know it's 6 weeks late from the deadline I set for myself), so distractions are the last thing I need.

However, if I am allowed to provide my own material, I think I might give it a shot. However, where the hell will I find Cowboy Bebop as a rental?

Even if it weren't an issue with compatibility - which it is - the shipping costs to send stuff overseas is rather high...not to mention the delay it causes.

That said, if any of you non-NA types are interested in providing your own materials -- that is, either renting or buying the stuff yourself -- we'd be happy to consider running it. We just can't send you the movies.
I could do some of them, since I have a substantial collection. Don't have FMA but I do have Spirited Away and Evangelion.
