1) just be careful when you send different people anime they "like" as you can get skewed reviews. ie. "This was good cause it was a shonen". On the other side of the fence you can get a "this was bad cause ti was a shonen". Also if an anime is particularly "bad" can a review be written without watching the entire series, or must it be completed to the end. (the only anime i never watched more than three episodes of was black blood brothers, couldn't stand it for some reason).

2) i wish you were doing this a few years ago. I wrote a killer review for code geass S1 and S2 as well as the a review on the effectiveness of the psychological aspects of death note and how they relate to live action thrillers. I'll see what i can come up with for some of these... (i am an avid down loader of anime, i always buy the anime after i watch it if i enjoyed the series, but i have seen a lot of the newer stuff from japan already. I am not certain where claymore chapter 3 starts off, but over all the first part of the anime adaptation of the manga was entertaining in the least.)

4) would it be like a constant release date? like every 1st Thursday of the month type of deal? Also how much ahead of the review would we have the anime to be able to watch?

5) Would each of the 5 reviewers be reviewing the same thing or each a different title? If it is each a different title is that so it can be spaced out across the month?

6) Does Canada count as North America in The Escapists books?... because some people say North America and when i tried to apply they said "Canada doesn't count."
1.) Of course.

4.) I'll check in on this.

5.) Different titles. No need to overlap.

6.) For the moment, we are counting Mexico and Canada. However, if shipping becomes a problem - either in the realm of cost or scheduling - then we reserve the right to go with just US-based reviewers, unfortunately. If you're from Mexico or Canada and interested in the position, you're welcome to apply and we'll certainly give you a SHOT, but please go into this with the understanding that we might opt to go with someone else if the logistics don't end up working out.

Question: I told my girlfriend about this and now she wants to join in; will both of us entering (or being selected) cause a problem?

I don't want both of us to be turned down because we're thought to be the same person (our addresses are the same), just using a pseudonym.
I will check into this, though my initial reaction is to say that there shouldn't be a problem as long as she registers her own Escapist forum name (if she doesn't have one already). In the event that you're both selected, assuming you can both deliver on time, there shouldn't be an issue. However, I'll want to be sure of this, so don't quote me on it just yet ;)

Neon Genesis? Cowboy Bebop? New?
These were chosen so we could have a selection of classic titles that A.) most hardcore anime fans would have seen at least ONE of, and B.) that our applicant reviewers would be familiar with. These won't be what you're actually reviewing, of course - it's just a writing sample.

1) As for the actual reviews, will they be spaced out about the same length as these two trials? If so, will we have to review large series in so few words, or will we handle the series one DVD/Boxset at a time?

2) If the regular reviewer is going to have a busy week, will they be able to request occasional spouts of shorter movies or boxes? (For example, reviewing a single Miazaki film would take less watching time than the complete boxset for R.O.D. the TV, and would be more conducive to a busy week's schedule.)
1.) For the most part, the latter. We rarely get full series at a time, it's usually just one DVD release.

2.) Of course - logistics can be worked out once we have our team.

I think I'll give it a try... to review either Full Metal Alchemist or Spirited Away.

I can't say I'm fully confident about my writing skills, but we'll see...

And just to confirm, by North America you do mean USA AND Canada? Because it's annoying when many things on US websites are only eligible for , well, US residents.
Yes, see my earlier response.

To clarify for anyone looking to provide their own material - again, these are just examples to get writing samples. We would be looking for more recent releases.

Heh, so is this like an Anime version of Yahtzee? Just a thought that sprang to mind...

But anyway, I'd love to apply, but sadly I am far too lazy for doing this on a regular basis if I was accepted.

Im going to try! I have some questions but honestly they can wait.
A short 250 word review and a long 750 review.

I have a question
Does this mean a review for one anime has to be 250 and one for another 750 or is it to reveiws for two animes each?

The Escapist is looking for a team of five (5) anime fans within our community to review the latest titles to hit North American shores. If you're interested in applying for the position, here?s what you need to do to make your case:

We?re looking for two review samples ? choose any of the following anime titles to review:

Neon Genesis Evangelion
Cowboy Bebop
Spirited Away
Fullmetal Alchemist

Send us a long review (750 words), and a short review (200 words) ? you can review the same anime for both, or choose to do a different one for each. Knowledge of the subject matter is as important as writing ability, so please only apply if you're fairly well-familiar with anime - we're looking for experts. Also keep in mind that you will be expected to meet assigned deadlines.

Please write the review samples in the word processing app of your choice ? Microsoft Word preferred. Send them as attachments to john(at)escapistmag(dot)com . Be sure to include your Escapist forum username and real name in the body of the email, and the email subject must contain ?Anime Review Position.? Applications must be submitted no later than 6:00 PM EST on Friday, March 20th, 2009.

This is an unpaid position ? all of the anime will be provided for free, and is yours to keep! Review assignments will be decided at The Escapist?s discretion.

Due to format differences, this position is open to North America residents only.

If you have any questions about the position or the application, ask them here, or PM CantFaketheFunk.
Now what do you want for a review? I'm talking to YOU escapist magazine viewers! You want a yahtzee type thing or something more serious? (I'm more comfortable in between.)
I'll be reviewing (i keep spelling review wrong and having to retype it and now its getting on my angsty teen nerves) FMA and Spirited Away, since they are the only ones I really saw.
Luckily I loved them both. Not that that will affect my review, oh who am I kidding of course it will! But not in ways you may think. If i like something I tend to be more seious about it and if i don't, well, you've all seen ZP right?

EDIT: oh, and i'm totally ok with reviewing yaoi, (bara too but please don't make me watch it, please.....) anything controversial and/ or distastful like, oh, Air Gear..... I kid! i liked air gear, ok, ok, calm... but seriously. I will review ANYTHING! FYI i don't like anime thats too old. It's just that the style in which it's done makes me wanna kill myself is all...... But I'll get used to it after a few episodes unless it suck ( not I don't like, I mean the animation gets in the way of he story or something.)

I do have one question, when writing these reviews will we be expected to avoid revealing spoilers?
Oh yeah......... how am I supposed to do that.

Oh, does it matter how old you are, cause I'm 17 so would it be illegal for you to send me mature anime? I've seen anime( not hentai) with nudity and thought nothing of it but our legal system in canada sucks and treats us all like cloned sheep so...

I have to ask, do child labor law apply here? I'm an avid anime fan and I would honestly like to give this a try, my skill in writing isn't the best but I'll be dammed if I couldn't at least give it a try. However I'm not sure if I could even try due to age. I'm not sure if this counts as a job or not, would anyone be willing to look into whether or not you could hire 15 year olds?

parental permission but that rlly doesn't apply here
Actually in Illinois(where I live) parents have no say in whether or not a child can work early, the official law is that you can work at 16, the same age you can drop out of school, for any amount of time, and you can work at 15 with a workers permit which is obtained through the schools.

You can only get a workers permit if you can convince the school that you can work and complete schoolwork, even then there are strictly enforced laws regulating how long you can work. Most employers don't bother hiring 15 year olds because it comes with all sorts of strings that are simply annoying to deal with.

However this is an odd situation where not only is this an unpaid position that could be labeled an internship, the employer is also in a different state with different child labor laws making this an odd circumstance that I have no idea on how it works.

I'll toss my hat into the mix for this one. I actually just finished with Cowboy Bebop and Full Metal Alchemist. I have also seen the entire Neon Genesis Evangelion and Spirited Away.

I'll take this time to improve on my writing skills and see if I have what it takes.

Few quick questions though.

1) There is no age limit for this just a large knowledge of anime correct?

2) What type of review are you looking for. Fan-based that tells about what goes on in the anime as a whole. Or picking out certain plus and minus points and expanding on them. A review can include both and much more but I really just want to make sure if you're looking for general or specific

Huh, a job reviewing anime in exchange for more anime... Tempting, but I barely work on my own projects as is. And then there's the college and all that...

*points to self* Another non-american that has to miss out due to regional restrictions *grumbles at lack of love for Australians/New Zealanders and goes back to working on a guest review to submit anyway*

One of my friends offered to me to act as an intermediary for forwarding the review materials if I wanted to apply, but unfortunately doing that would result in me never making the deadlines due to the amount of time for the required materials to travel halfway around the world via snail-mail (which is a good point made by the mods, they would have to send out materials 2-3 weeks prior to people in the oceanic regions...)

Not really into much anime, and I haven't actually written a review before, but if you ever break out that manga, I'll definitely give it a shot.

What a wonderful opportunity! If I lived in North America.
Man, this has proven true time and time again for me with things on the Escapist. Damn it all. I have watched most of this though. If there was anything in it for me, I'd happily try my hand at it. But that time is better spent for me, I guess.

Let us rise and combat this obviously reasonable rule regardless of whether we could actually watch the anime on our PAL brilliance or not!

But yeah, it sucks.
