Does anyone remember the act that recently came into effect about the ban on extreme porn in the UK? well they're now trying to pass a law that will have you put in jail for three years and/or a hefty fine simply for owning any anime either on DVD, comics or saved onto your computer's hard drive/Temp Internet Files that are for now completely fine to have.

Here is a basic outline of this ban or whatever they wanna call it;
A law has been passed about imagery with violence and sex has been passed and come into effect. As for Anime they wanna do the same as the characters look like young people even if its been stated in the anime that they are over 18.

Comic shop voice is campaigning against this (fearing the existing Dangerous Pictures Act could also be used to prosecute cartoon images).

Sorry, will never pass, freedom of expression and such, also the fact that people would be PISSED, I don't watch Gundam 00 because I think the characters are sexy, I watch it for the fucking Gundam battles!

Edit: In Canada it is illegal to have even litterature involving children doing sexual acts, also pictures and cartoons, if the U.K. is going to enact the same law, then you have no need to fear, they still show anime here!

Erm, the telegraph article link doesn't work...

This reminds me of the recent case where that man imported some loli-con hentai. This change may be in reaction to that?

Srry about the link, this has ban has been in process since '07 so the article is most likely deleted, but you're half right, this is actually an extension to and was first noticed by the extreme porn ban and they're most likely using that importation as evidence to help secure it.

I know where you're coming from and I would be glad if they banned actual child pornaography even if its animated, but they cant do that because its near impossible to tell the age of an animated minor unless they're very young. Have you ever tried guessing the age of someone in real life and been totally off? They're even thinking about banning images that have people stated as old enough and blatantly looking old enough but wearing a childrens clothes, how ridiculous does that sound!?

Also any anime that has japanese students in them is gone because of the usual uniform worn by said students.

This wouldn't have gone through parlaiment if there wasn't a possibility of it being put into action and this many people wouldn't be concerned enough to voice their opinion and object.

I dont know about you but I don't want to pay an exuberant fine, spend 3 years in jail or be put on the sex offenders register!

I've been reading through the current progress on the above links and inofrmation points to us having less than 2 months to do something about it, so you can say that it most likely won't pass but try to ensure it by taking 5 seconds of your time to sign your name on the petition

I wouldn't be so sure they already passed the ban on extreme pornography act which basically banned many peoples freedom of expression particularly in the BDSM community. I think there's a chance they'll pass it because our government just doesn't seem to care freedom.

It's not just anime, its any photographic or pseudo photographic depictions of people appearing to be minors in no/provocative clothing, so even tank girl could be considered as banned.

Tank Girl wasn't a minor though...not even close. Although, there is plenty of other stuff that is a little hard to tell. Here's a very good article on Neil Gaiman's blog all about the subject, probably would have to have been been posted sooner or later anyway:

http://journal.neilgaiman.com/2008/12/why-defend-freedom-of-icky-speech.html

Let me see if I can push you off the fence, a little. I'm afraid it's going to a long, and probably a bit rambly answer -- a credo, and how I arrived at that.

If you accept -- and I do -- that freedom of speech is important, then you are going to have to defend the indefensible. That means you are going to be defending the right of people to read, or to write, or to say, what you don't say or like or want said.

The Law is a huge blunt weapon that does not and will not make distinctions between what you find acceptable and what you don't. This is how the Law is made.

People making art find out where the limits of free expression are by going beyond them and getting into trouble.

Are you sure it's anime, as-in the anime that airs on T.V, the anime you can buy from shops? I'm sure you mean "hentai".
