I've become interested in Doctor Who. I've been trying to collect some information on where to begin with the series as I do understand it dates back to the 60s. What kind of material is out there? What movies or TV series do I start with? Where can I find them? Are there official books, comics, or other things? If someone can point me in the right direction that would be great. Thank you.

Whoa.....that's a BIG subject.

Ok...

I've got to go out so start here : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doctor_Who

But there's more material than you could collect in a lifetime.

I have over 100 books, 10 audio discs, toys and the like and I'm only a novice collector.

You're talking roughly 45 YEARS worth of material.

If you've got the time, patience (and money)

You can get just about every episode of Doctor Who ever off the bbc, the current ones are available on dvd (what isn't these days). But for the older ones you have to look into the deep, dark realms of bbc home video, just remember to stay out of the shadows...

I doubt it. They've killed off nearly every character from the spin-offs. I bet we'll get a 'the universe resets itself' deus ex machina and everything will be OK again.

And yes, Torchwood is a spin-off

I have all of the Tom Baker and Peter Davidson episodes on BETA. Take that!

Here's some basic info for you. The BBC serial (that means episodic) began in the 60s, in black and white. The Doctor is a Time Lord who travels through time and space in his craft, the TARDIS (Time and Relative Dimensions in Space). He usually has at least one assistant with him, and it's usually a pretty girl. A Tardis can change shape to mimic anything, thus helping it blend in when it visits a new enviornment, but the chameleon circuit in the Doctor's Tardis is broken, so his Tardis always looks like a Police box.

A Time lord can regenerate 12 times -- instead of dying, he/she gets a new body. (Easy way to excuse the switching out of actors as the series progressed.) The Doctor's nemesis is The Master, an evil time lord.

In the new series, the Doctor is the last Time Lord (though the Master makes an appearance in a few eps).

In previous iterations of the series, the Doctor traveled to new planets in every episode, but the newer shows take place almost entirely on Earth. (Way to keep the budget down, I should think.) Torchwood is an organization created to help protect Earth from aliens. Spun off into its own (also excellent) show.

i have a full length season 16 scarf :p

they originally did the regeneration thing because William Hartnell was sick and couldn't continue, so they made the plot device

i think when they resync with time David will be back as the doctor, i've heard they are skipping next year, so he can do hamlet and do several specials in 2009

tho i do hope they bring the time lords back and add more aliens

also on a funny side note the girl that played the Doctor's daughter in said episode is Peter Davidson's daughter, so she's really the Doctor's daughter and is currently David Tennant's gf, so i guess time lords are incestuous too

The older episodes are being released, on DVD, although not all have been yet.

I recommend visiting www.doctorwhoforum.com for more information, if you ask for recommendations, the fans there will help you out.

Good luck with discovering Dr Who, I've been a fan for most of my life... (bet u could guess that from my username...)

Me, too. I started watching one night during summer break when I was about eight or ten years old. It was 11:00 pm, and I was looking for something to watch on the telly. I thought the name "Dr. Who" sounded neato, so I tried it out. It was the first episode of "The Ark in Space." Been watching ever since.

I think my first experience was my Dad showing me "Death to the Daleks" and "Brain of Morbius" when I was 5, been a fan since.

Ark of Space is brilliant. I'd also advise reading : http://www.shipsinker.com/wordpress/2007/03/10/a-doctor-who-comic-the-10-doctors/

Because it rocks.

Basically; the Doctor is on his tenth regeneration (each actor plays a different regeneration) and a few friends of mine have seen every episode ever. I'm still too young to have caught them all, but they range from the truly sublime (Like The Green Death(John Pertwee), Ark in Space/The Stones of Blood (Tom Baker), Logopolis/The Black Orchid (Peter Davidson), The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances (Christopher Eccleston), Blink/Silence in the Library (where my avatar is from) (David Tennant)) to the atrocious (Paradise Towers?).

There's also a number of non-canon roles like the three movies, Peter Cushing and Paul Mcgann (Eighth Doctor), as well as "The Curse of the Fatal Death" which is a parody wrote by Steven Moffat; who is taking over in the next series.

From what I can understand, the NEW Doctor (Number 11) is tipped to be James Nesbitt(Jekyll) or Robert Carlisle(Bigsby from Train Spotting), but we'll wait and see.

Outpost Gallifrey is where most of the episodes are reviewed; and then you can see which are the good ones and the bad ones.

But it's always nice to see another new Whovian. :)

nope the McGann doctor is canon, hence why David is the 10th doctor

sadly a large chun of the old episodes are lost, the masters were destroyed

Grrrrr... No.... Calm, calm, calm. It's pseudo-canon. The Master was never a shapeshifter and the Doctor is NOT half human.

Warning to General Mao Chu: There are some VERY rabid Who fans out there. Be wary. :)

I loved Blink, one of my favourites too. Genesis of the Daleks is another classic. You could probably skip Colin Baker's ones though... seem to recall them being dreadful.

And by destroyed you mean RECORDED OVER or SET ON FIRE. Thanks BBC. And thanks for only reapeating them on cable too. Grrr.
