I should explain a bit better that it's not just that they aren't explaining stuff, but outside of the opening, the scenes are: Cousins talking, finding Nyu/Lucy, taking her in, stuff happening, someone talking, and that's 18 minutes in. I don't mind not having everything explained. But having, basically, 15 minutes of talking without really saying anything is a bit dull.

Nothing about the show seemed to really give the vibe of bad to me and while I like the show overall, there is just one part I don't want to look back on, but it's good for many reasons so try it all before you knock it.
It's a decent show. Not a classic, but definitely worth a watch, though I will say it is overrated. Plot wise, it's lacking to say the least. It never really gets past, "These girls have superpowers, let's see how many ways they can kill you." Some of the later episodes attempt to add a plot, but to me, it was too little, too late. I've heard the manga is better, but I've not been bothered enough to download it.
I agree with most people here that you shouldn't judge any anime by it's first episode. My personal rule is give it three to four before deciding if you should continue or not. As for the show itself, with the exception of a few moments, it's not very good. It seems to try to shock more than anything else and in my opinion it doesn't even do a very good job at that.thebobmaster said:

Yeah Elfen Lied is really weird... and I don't mean all of the gore, nudity and moe bullshit...
It has one really good character... that blurs the line between villian and hero, antaganist and protagonist... and the show, during some parts, does an amazing job of exploring this complex character relationship and underlying themes regarding human nature...
What it does better than any other show especially is really find and pull on that fine line between intellectually stimulating and emotionally compelling... some of the time...
but... and this is a big but... it's needlessly horrific, emotionally manipulative and a lot of the time offensively stupid... especially with the whole split personality moe thing... I mean if this show was cut down into like the best hour and a half of all 13 or 14 episodes, you'd have one hell of a movie... hell if the show didn't follow the Manga so closely and try to pander to the lowest common denominator 90% of the time, found some writers that didn't suffer from schizophrenia and embrace it's interesting character and themes it'd be good...
Than again it was made by a hentai animation studio... so you couldn't expect much... and you can see where they spent most of their budget... in the first 2 minutes, getting someone to copy some Gustav Klimt paintings and photoshop anime characters into it... still a cool opening though... kind of fitting for the 15% or so of the show that was good...<.<

It's something that I'd suggest watching until the end... despite the large amount of crap in the show, roughly 90% of it... there's still enough depth there to save it for some people... I mean when it really puts it's mind to it, it just does such a great job of intellectual and emotional depth... as well as style when it feels like it... though for the vast, vast, majority of the show it simply doesn't...
The disparity between what happens in this show and the ending theme song is the best part of the show.
See, in every episode a bunch of horribly depressing stuff happens then the incredibly upbeat ending theme plays. This song is the Japanese equivalent of an Avril Lavigne song.

I'm not a fan of Elfen Lied. I use to love it when I first saw it a few years ago, but as time went by it seems really dated and flawed to me. It's trying to tell a dark, adult, and mature storyline, but it's more childish if anything. The violence is so cartoonish and mindless that it takes all the seriousness out of it and cease to be disturbing. If anything it's on the same level as Bludgeoning Angel Dokuro-chan. Not to mention you have some bullshit ecchi/ harem moments that really grates on me, like the wimpy male lead somehow living in a house filled with women, or when he gets caught in an embarrassing position with another girl, etc. which seems very out of place in a show that's as supposedly "dark" as this. Other than that, the animation is terrible, there's a number of useless characters, some dialogue is a bit awkward, voice work in both English and Japanese isn't very good, and the writing gets pretty bad, too. Also, the ending to me just seems like blatant fanservice, and in context, makes no sense...

The manga is much better than the anime, so I'd say read it instead of watch it. (Either way, it does in fact get better later on.)
Well when I went into it I wasn't expecting the "Dark" aspect of it and it caught me completely off guard and probably did some scaring.If you know what the show is it is fairly good not amazing but it more of a "All the awful parts of humanity drawn to the extreme" and does dabble on some touchy subjects I personally thought it got pretty good.
(I didn't actually know what it was about I just saw it on a pals top 10 list and it was on Netflix so I said "Oh lets give this a try." before reading the description. Never making that mistake again.)

Seconded,and stole the words from my mouth before I thought to think them together. Lucy is one the greatest characters that have ever been, near impossibly heart-wrenching, tragic and hopeful at the same time. Ignore the cousin and Nyu, though, they're just nuisances that take away from the emotional and psychological depth of the interaction between two characters--namely, Kota and Lucy.evilneko said:

The whole split personality thing was the main thing that sucked me in. First it's all BLOOD GUTS GORE ARRRGH which really isn't my thing, but then she's suddenly completely different and you want to know, what happened to her? Is she putting it on? What happens if they try to take her in and she's not the same girl they thought she was? Is she going to turn bad again?
