Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze Sees Dixie Join Diddy and DK

The Wii U Donkey Kong Country game brings DK and his pals into glorious HD.

Nintendo is riding the recent Donkey Kong resurgence into the Wii U, announcing Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze for the system due out later this year. The new game brings DK into glorious HD, as Iwate states, you can see the individual hairs on his furry monkey back. The game will feature five worlds, co-operative multiplayer, and the return of Dixie Kong, Diddy's love interest from Donkey Kong Country 2.

The 2 player simultaneous mode works pretty much exactly the same as it does in Donkey Kong Country: Returns for both the 3DS and Wii, but player 2 will be able to choose between Diddy and Dixie. The new game will feature five new worlds, which seems a bit short considering the eight (or nine) worlds the Wii/3DS version had.

When playing as Dixie, you'll be able to use her unique helicopter spin ability that she used in Donkey Kong Country 2.

Iwata boasts that the new game will uses different camera angles - not just the side view that we are used to in Donkey Kong games. A segment of the video shows a front view being used for some of the game's famous "barrel blast" segments.

In Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Vikings have overrun Donkey's home, giving the whole game an icy vibe. They probably stole his bananas as well because that's what happens in every single Donkey Kong game.

The game will be available "later this year", both in stores and as a Nintendo eShop download.

Yeah, I can't lie. I am really looking forward to this game, but I can't really see what Dixie is bring to the table. She used to be a little better because of her hair, but she wasn't as good as Diddy to throw barrels. At least in Donkey Kong Country Returns Diddy did have his jetpack removing the one advantage Dixie had.

Anyway, I am really looking forward to a new 2D Donkey Kong.

Just a quick note: the article says 'his fury back' - that's probably missing an extra R.

On topic: I used to love the Donkey Kong games as a kid but haven't played any of the current/last (and obviously next) gen ones. How do they stack up to the good oldies, nostalgia goggles aside?

Dixie's barrel throwing was meant for high throws, remember?

Only 5 worlds?
I think that DK Island will count as a world itself, bringing the number to 6.

We also don't know how many stages are in each world yet, but that's just up to speculation at this point.

I like tropical, and I like Dixie. Cool. Now I just have to justify buying a Ningrundo uueeehhhh for it. As long as kiddy isn't in it, I didn't like him, or kiddy or kitty or kitttttyyyyyyyy.

I'm really looking forward to this. Donkey Kong Country Returns was one of my favorite platformers of this generation, and I'm hoping they can fix some of the issues the last game had, especially since many of them seemed more due to the Wii itself than anything.

As for the five worlds, I think we need to see how many levels are in each. Some of the worlds in the previous Donkey Kong games felt like minor transitions at best from previous worlds, especially when levels used the same or similar settings. Perhaps all they're doing is removing the excess worlds and putting all the levels in previous worlds that fit the level's design.

I actually preferred Donkey Kong Country Returns to the Donkey Kong Country, though its difficulty seemed based on bad design decisions more than the original did. It's still a great game, though, and definitely kept to the spirit of the older Donkey Kong games.

Sure, but that doesn't make it any less inconvenient. Moves slower, more chance of the barrel being destroyed while carrying it and harder to hot target (even high ones because of the angle and the fact that she swings it backwards increasing the chance of the barrel breaking).

She might be meant for high throws, but the fact that Diddy manages high throws if you just know how makes her barrel throwing worse. Give Diddy all the advantages Dixie used to have and I wonder what her place is.
