Are you interested in <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/139537-Dungeons-Dragons-Announces-Elemental-Evil-as-Next-Storyline-Gives-Release-Dates>the Dungeons & Dragons "Elemental Evil" story arc, and want to design a character in advance? Well you're in luck! Wizards of the Coast has just released a new Fifth Edition player's companion specifically for the Princes of the Apocalypse adventure. While not nearly as extensive as <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/tabletop/reviews/12103-D-D-Player-s-Handbook-Review-A-Greatest-Hits-Collection>the official Player's Handbook, it still introduces four new races and a whole host of spells to toy with. Oh, and as a bonus: You can download it for free.
Set in the <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/tag/view/forgotten%20realms>Forgotten Realms, Princes of the Apocalypse will pit heroes against four elemental prophets plotting to unleash evil powers across the world. The 25-page player's companion includes four new races to choose from: the birdfolk Aarakocra, the subterranean Deep Gnomes, the genie-offspring Genasi, and the powerful Goliaths. Each race's culture and starting abilities are elaborated enough so players can start forming their party now - with the help of previous 5e publications of course.
Chapter 2, meanwhile, takes up most of the supplement with new 5e spells. Even if you're not interested in Princes of the Apocalypse, this content is worth checking out - Wizards of the Coast included over 40 spells for Bards, Druids, Rangers, Sorcerers, Warlocks, and Wizards. Naturally, most of these spells reflect the elemental theme, letting players control winds, reshape the earth, even summon storms and tidal waves.
Most of this content will find its way into Princes of the Apocalypse, specifically the Genasi race and all of the spells. But as it stands, the Player's Companion is still a great resource for most campaign, whether you face down elemental evils or not.

Princes of the Apocalypse will launch on April 7, 2015.
