What, seriously? The difference is those games are actually games where you have fun. Farming is not a leisure activity, it's a vocation, so we're talking about somebody addicted to a 'game' that is simulating work, only they aren't being paid for it.JWAN said:Some people like playing the same mario/final fantasy/halo games over and over and overGildan Bladeborn said:Why the hell would anyone intentionally go about raising virtual crops for fun - what's next, Cubicle Drone-ville, where you shepherd your virtual office worker through the grind of the ole 9-5?
As much as I'd like to rag on Dr Phil, I really have to agree with him here. Even in the field of casual gaming it's bloody terrible, and anyone who goes about lying to their family so they can feed their 'farmville addiction' sounds like they might perhaps both the lamest and most boring person on the face of the earth. For shame!
whats the difference?

You can argue that people are capable of enjoying their vocations, but I will counter that by pointing out that video games simulating what the layman might see as "awesome" jobs still invariably leave out all the boring and tedious parts of it in favor of the empowerment fantasy. And when have you ever heard somebody describe farming as "awesome", hmm? What's that? Never you say? Thought as much.
The people who obsessively play one game over and over are weird and obsessed but at least they aren't working imaginary jobs for no money and also no fun.
It's the same beast. People need to get off their asses and away from video games once in a while, be it Farmville or CoD. And while I play games a couple of nights a week (I still haven't finished Fallout 3 after a month), no, I have never lied to anyone so I could do so.ender214 said:I would have to condemn Dr. Phil over the mother on this one. Yes, Farmville isn't exactly a great game and as gamers we are all appalled when it is associated with our past time. But if this same speech was given to someone with Farmville replaced with CoD or WoW, I'm sure the reaction would be universally negative at the Escapist.
And be honest, you never lied to your family/friends so that you could play a game instead of doing something social/productive?
Not always.Bloody Crimson said:Aren't games supposed to be an escape from reality?
Is war fun in real life? Well yes and no - the parts of it we keep replicating in video games certainly can be, but there's that pesky risk of life and limb and ethical quandaries to consider. A game that accurately simulated life in the military though would be extremely boring, as The Onion hilariously depicted in one of their informative videos. Thus our video games only present us with the entertaining parts, with none of the potential psychological scarring or life threatening injuries.JWAN said:go look up the definition of "game".
besides were not talking about a real farm here, do you think that in real life war is fun?
if moving pieces of rock around a board is considered a game farmville is a game

I find it amusing that you refer to things like Checkers, Chess, Backgammon, Go, et all as "moving rocks around a board" in such a derogatory tone, as if Farmville even had a prayer of aspiring to their entertainment value. It doesn't.
Also I'm going to guess that you play Farmville and have thus taken issue with me insinuating you are one of the most boring individuals on the face of this planet, as there's really no reason to be this defensive about it otherwise. Consequently, I don't actually care what you think on this subject (because you're wrong and lame) and will therefore cease arguing with you for fear that whatever made you a Farmville apologist is somehow contagious (and spread by internet arguments). You can't be too cautious!
Exactly, there isn't a single problem unsolved by shouting a fat unemployed person until they cry.AfterAscon said:We need Jeremy Kyle to address this issue before serious progress can be made.
So it's alright for him to talk down at games YOU don't like, but once he starts judging fairly, suddenly lines have been crossed.Nitpicker of the Wastes said:Agreed.MR T3D said:+1 RESPECT POINTS
