Doesn't surprise me, though I was sure ME2 would take the title.
that makes two of us. i thought it was alright, I didn't think it was all that. ME2 I think is more deserving.

As others have said, it probably beat ME or ME2 because its also on the PS3. I think its also because its a better game, but I know I'm probably in a minority on that.

Why are people surprised? It was a heavily marketed multiplatform title, a first for the PS3 from the developer in fact.

If Mass Effect 2 was on the PS3, that would be the best selling Bioware game.

All the success to this great developer.

I guess it's because of the lack of western RPGs in the past couple years.

Something decent comes along in rpg land and all the starved fans of the genre go out and buy it.
We had some RPshooters and TPLs, but full party control is a lost feature.

Dragon Age: Origins, on the other hand, was designed to be multi-platform from day one.
It was designed to be PC-only from day one. EA mandated that it be ported to the other platforms when they bought BioWare (admittedly this is just a hunch on my part), and the console ports were contracted out to Edge of Reality while the PC release was delayed so it would be simultaneous on all platforms.

I'm sure the availability on consoles certainly made it sell much better than if it were PC-only, but I suspect the biggest contributing factor was EA's marketing budget.

That's cool considering the audience it was intended for.I was recently playing Dage and my hdd bricked on me after only owning it for 5 days i had 40 hours clocked in, but i gotta say the mass effects games have been the best part of my summer so far they have such great writers over there at bio ware that is always what makes me connect to there worlds.

One more thing for a game they didn't expect to be that successful they sure did market the hell out of it must be nice to be able to reach into to EA's pockets.

Oh you have GOT to be fucking kidding me!

This was my least favorite Bioware game (that means it's still in my top twenty games of all time though...)

If any game deserves that title, it's Mass Effect.

Well, it's Jade Empire, but that's obviously not going to happen.

I bet the game of the year edition would have to be at least 3 discs long from all the extra DLC they've released for it.

Hm... for a game basically made for the "hardcore" crowd, its interesting that the mainstream loves it so much.

Maybe thats because the mainstream isn't as stupid as everyone says.

this one of the few games where i can happen that i look at the clock, it is 6 o'clock and when i look ten minutes further again, it is 8 o'clock. the only other game i know where this also happens is oblivion. it is because i'm sucked in the world.

so you telling me you didn't expect the spiritual successor to Baldur's gate to be a main stream success? that's like saying condom's will be a flash in the sexual pan.

I'm not surprised about this. Their dullest title to date (IMO) happens to be their best seller.

Definitely proves that there's still a large market for Long Single Player RPG's with a Core Audience in mind.

I'm kinda not surprised that ME2 wasn't the top selling considering, when it came out, everybody instead bought the first game so that they could go the paragon route and make sure that Wrex doesn't eat those evil glowing plasma bullets that ME2 says you gave him in the first game. Stupid default origin...
