Dreaming Of An Inception Card Game

For all of those gamers out there eager to step back into the world of Inception, one fan had dreamt up Magic: The Gathering decks based on the film.

The recent blockbuster Inception boasts such a perfect confluence of factors - explosive set pieces, distinctive character classes, a set of rules controlling the dream worlds, and an extensive focus on timing - that it honestly comes as a surprise that nobody has tried to license it for a game of some variety. Still, while gamers won't be able to commit acts of inception on their home consoles, one fan has provided a way to revisit the characters and setting of the film with a homemade card game based on the popular Magic: The Gathering.

Jamie Bard, a contributor to the Geekosystem [http://www.geekosystem.com/] blog, has created two complete 40-card decks - modeled after the theme of Extractors versus Dreamers - which recreate the settings and characters of the film within the rules of the Magic: The Gathering card game. To give an example - just as the characters in the film created dreams-within-dreams, the "We Need to go Deeper" card creates a game-within-a-game, effectively resetting both players.

Players that want to give the decks a try just need to print out the images, glue them to existing cards, and throw in some land pieces. Until a videogame or table-top RPG comes through official channels, this looks like one of the more interesting implementations of the ideas and mechanics proposed by the film.

But a Magic deck has to have at least 60 cards.

Cool? Absolutely. Complete? Notsomuch.

Interesting. Not entirely sure how it would play out, but interesting nonetheless. Man, that movie has gotten quite a cult following already...

Looks like this would make for an interesting duel with a friend. Especially if you've both seen the movie.

That's...pretty ridiculous.

I say we marginalize it by creating movie tie in card games for all movies... Cats & Dogs, Nanny McPhee, etc.

I kid.

You shouldn't need to use glue if you use card protectors. Neat, nonetheless.

A magic deck must have 40 or 60+ card, so the decks are complete.

OT: this is awesome.

http://www.wizards.com/magic/rules/EN_MTGM11_Rulebook_LR_Web.pdf Pg. 14:

"There are two rules: Your deck must have at least 60 cards, and your deck can?t have more than four copies of any single
card (except for basic lands)."

There's a particular game type that uses 40-card decks, but standard rules (ie. What most people use) requires 60. The only time you would stray from that is for a more advanced variation.

With all the crazy blue cards out there, you don't really need to invent any others, though you'd have to draw from a lot of sets. You'd just want to make sure everyone was playing Blue-Artifact decks or something along those lines, and maybe use the new Planar Magic rules to create a plane that represented the dream world.

Should still be an easy fix. For example, just take a few of the cards from the "Dreamer" deck and fold them into the "Extractor" deck. Problem solved as long as you don't break the "four copies" rule.

Whether or not it's playable wasn't really the point. It's cool either way, I was just nitpicking because the article worded something wrong. It said there were two complete decks, there aren't. That was honestly my entire point.

Fair enough. I guess the question, then, as posed by somebody that doesn't really play Magic (but now has a fleeting interest) is that if you "mixed" the cards from one deck into another so that you had a total of 60 cards, would it then be "playable"?

Aye, it would. It'd kind of ruin the theme of "Faction X vs. Faction Y", but it would.
