Dredd Lays Down The Law In 2012

Lionsgate's released some new information about its Judge Dredd reboot, including a 2012 release date.

It's been a good sixteen years since Sylvester Stallone's Judge Dredd mangled the beloved British comic character on the big screen. That said, there's been a lot of positive buzz around Lionsgate's Dredd reboot, which is getting a lot of attention at this week's Comic-Con. From the sound of things, this is going to be a much more faithful portrayal of the comic character and it looks like fans are going to have to wait at least another year or so before the reboot hits theaters.

John Wagner, the writer who created the character back in 1977, is serving as a creative consultant for the movie, which is apparently going to be "darker and grittier" than the original film. Here's the official synopsis from Lionsgate:

Dredd takes us to the wild streets of Mega City One, the lone oasis of quasi-civilization on Cursed Earth. Judge Dredd (Karl Urban) is the most feared of elite Street Judges, with the power to enforce the law, sentence offenders and execute them on the spot - if necessary. The endlessly inventive mind of writer Alex Garland and the frenetic vision of director Peter Travis bring Dredd to life as a futuristic neo-noir action film that returns the celebrated character to the dark, visceral incarnation from John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra's revered comic strip.

Lionsgate has also revealed that the movie will storm theaters, both in 2D and 3D (groan), on September 21st, 2012. Between the above screenshot, the fact that Karl Urban is playing the lead role (that man is watchable in anything, even Priest), and the impressive résumé of screenwriter Alex Garland (he wrote 28 Days Later, Sunshine, and Never Let Me Go), it looks like Dredd's second visit to movie theaters might be the one that wins over audiences.

I trust Alex Graland to deliver. Karl Urban is awsome. The costume really reminds me of Dredd as he was in the early comics. I say bring it! Can't wait.:)

I thought it would have been funny, in an ironic kind of way, if it was Nathan Fillion as Dredd.

I never read any of the Dredd comics, but I might have to, they sound pretty awesome. This film actually sounds good, where as the other film was a 'so-bad-it's-good'.

Not familiar with the Judge Dredd series.
All I know is that the Stallone movie left me with a bad first impression.
I want to know I'm wrong.

The 16 year old film was awesome for 20 minutes. Right up until Dredd removed his helmet.

I hope they do this right. Wonder if they can resist the temptation to remove his helmet.

Karl Urban you say? This is an instant success, just look at Doom, he owned that film. I can't wait to see how this pans out, hopefully they do the comics justice this time.

Can we really call this a "reboot"? When I think reboot I think "ignoring the established cast and continuity of an existing film franchise in order to get out from under the weight of said cast and continuity", not "hoo boy, that one film sucked".
