Drink a Pint of Game of Thrones Ale

Game of Thrones beer is coming, and just in time for the Season 3 Premiere.

You may have read A Song of Ice and Fire and enjoyed its HBO adaptation, but now Brewery Ommengang is hoping you'll give Game of Thrones ale a try. The brewer has entered into a license agreement with HBO to produce four new beers and ales, each based on the popular medieval fantasy series. Unlike previous Game of Thrones beverages (which are apparently a thing), these beers are intended to connect directly to the themes and characters of Westeros and its surrounding world. It's not entirely clear how Ommengang is going to achieve that, but does it matter? There's really only one purpose Ommengang intends for these beers: for you to drink them during the Game of Thrones Season 3 premiere.

Ommengang's first Game of Thrones beer, the aptly-named "Iron Throne Blonde Ale", should hit stores for Season 3's launch by March 31st, 2013. The ale will be available on draft, the more authentic choice to be sure, but 750ml bottles can also be purchased at the recommended price of $8.50. Three other beers are planned to follow, with one debuting in Fall, and the others during later seasons.

If your Game of Thrones premiere party will already have drinks on hand, it probably makes sense to give Ommengang's brew a shot. Just remember to drink responsibly, as it's unlikely anyone will be around in the morning to chop your head off and end your suffering.

Total derp here, I mixed up my metric bottle to customary bottle conversions. If anything, $8.50 for a bottle that big is on the cheap side. Comparing to Trappist ales (which are the most common beer you find in that size around here), $12 or $13 is more common.

Edit: Yeah, doing some more research, about $8 on the low end and $13 on the high end, without getting into any of the really exotic beers; I saw one listed at $33 a bottle on Total Wine and More's site. Which, word to the wise, if anyone here is ever in the US in a state that has them and is in need of a liquor store, go to a Total Wine and More. They're like Toys 'R Us for alcoholics. Which probably doesn't mean much to those of you from outside the US, but basically: big freakin toy store with a huge selection, except in this case all of the toys are various types of booze. Relatively low prices, too.

True. I don't buy much in the 750 ml size (it's just not a common size, just about everything is either 12 ounces or, for certain brews, one pint), but it seems like you'd get some kind of a discount for buying in bulk, you know? Although looking up the one brand I've seen in that size before (Orkney Dragonhead Stout, if you're interested) it does seem to be roughly in line.

Oh, and for comparison, your average crappy macrobrew is $1 or less per bottle, especially if you buy in bulk. Cans of the really crappy stuff are just insanely cheap, but college and (illicit) high school parties are about the only place you'll ever see those.

Edit: Actually, you know what? I had it backwards and got some of the sizes mixed up. First of all, the bottle size I was thinking of as 750 was actually 500 ml, which is slightly larger than a pint. Second, what I erroneously listed as a pint was actually 750 ml. $8.50 for a bottle that size is actually pretty cheap.

Can I come and live with you? I regularly drink real ale here in England and these prices equate to roughly what I would expect for a bottle that size. So, I think it's more a case of beer is cheap for you, than this is an expensive price.

Well, I see how they can make "inspired" brews, use historical methods (i.e. before technology for tight temperature control came around), maybe employ wild yeast from areas climatically related to the areas of Westeros, maybe flavour them with appropriate spices and who am I kidding, I can't even say that with a straight face anymore.

They'll make some standard beers, the kind that big breweries pump out in millions, then slap the logo on and rake in the cash.

There will definitely be a Winter Ale in there, for that meme power. Come to think of it, the "four" might very well all be seasonal brews.

Ale is beer. Just sayin'. Saying "four new beers and ales" suggest they are different things.

In any case I hope they make a stout. Scratch that, they better make a stout. Screw them if they don't because stout is the only king of beer I like to drink, especially in the winter.

That said I'm a little meh on the whole Ale, if their other drink merchandising is any indication of how bad this might be, I think I'll pass. Seriously, the True Blood drink was absolutely god awful, it's like they went out and said what's the cheapest garbage that we can rebrand and sell for like twenty times its worth?
