drug testing in schools

My old high school has recently decided to implement a drug testing policy for students wanting to participate in extracurricular activities and for the right to obtain a parking permit. i've not seen any other schools with this type of policy and would like to know if any of you are familiar with it and if it has been successful. i'm concerned that it will stop many people from participating in school and whether it will be used to kick otherwise good kids out of school for toking up once or twice during the summer. it is also worth noting that the parents of a student can request a drug test for their child and that kids can be tested if they are acting strangely, so it is affecting more than just student priviledges.

EDIT: one problem i see with this policy is the fact that this same school gave my prom date and i a beer mug and wine glass for our prom gifts. which we promptly took to a prom party and used the hell out of :D

Man, that's bullshit! If I want to be high while at school, I have all the right to!

Anyway, I think the idea is stupid, totally unnecessary and a waste of funding.

I like the idea!
I'd be ok with taking a drug test, and I'd totally permit them to test my kids, provided I had any that age.

My school has random drugs tests occasionally but nothing's come of it.

The only thing to remember is that drugs stay in the body for something like 2 months or more.

That's lame. That's basically saying that if you smoke, you're not allowed to learn teamwork/group skills and social skills.

i also kinda feel it makes drug use even more taboo (and we all know how kids stay away from stuff that is taboo)

I see no real problem with it. Too many kids these days getting hooked in high school and wasting away the rest of their lives with the stuff.

Once they're on their own, they can do whatever they want. When they're at a phase where they need to be educated, they should lay off.

If there are school rules against smoking/drinking at such a time where alcohol will affect your ability to perform at school/taking drugs, then why not?

Either you're guilty, in which case you're breaking the rules and are afraid of finally getting caught or you're innocent and thus have nothing to fear.

Well actually, no you dont, its illegal to take drugs unless under special circumstances, so no you dont have the right to smoke cannibis, personally I dont see why cannibis is illegal, drinking is far worse but well the laws the law.

Well, if you're only toking up "once or twice during the summer," you really shouldn't be worried about failing a drug test.

Seems kind of extreme for the school to do this for all extracuricular activities.

Just don't test positive for super diabetes. [http://roosterteeth.com/archive/?id=736]

I hear cannabis lingers for a couple of weeks, you could be correct though. My sources are usually not very credible.

I'd be happy to undergo a drugs test and allow my children to take them too, it seems a good idea. Back when I was in high school I would smoke the odd spliff now and again, not during school hours but after.
Seems like a good time to catch them, so I'm for the idea.

Thank you Cpt Obvious. I should probably put a "XD" at the end of each joky sentence I make.

Depends on what test, if they make you do a urine test and you havent smoked in a few weeks then they wont catch you, if they take swabs, blood or hair it can go back as far as six months.

This is such a moronic idea and shame on any of you that agreed with it.

Theres such a massive amount of fear when regarding drugs, the most common drug they might discover children using is weed, and judging by quite a few of these replies none of these people have even seen it.
The only thing this policy is going to do i exclude otherwise good students just because they had a joint or 2, which is only going to make matters worse for the community and students themselves.

I don't see anything wrong with it. You want to get high, do it outside of school and don't do a bunch of extracurricular activities. I mean, I'm sure using weed once or twice wouldn't affect things too much, but the constant potheads have chosen their path, and they need to deal with the consequences.

From your avatar and one of your other posts I've read, you're a boxer. So I'm pretty certain you would have undergone the tests at some point.
Seems like a good source to me, thanks.

I'm still for the idea all the same.

Probably should, I didnt know you were joking, after reading the thread about idiots comparing Obama to hitler, then some one actually being stupid enough to think they have the right to smoke weed isnt too far fetched.

If doing drugs is against the law (which admittedly it's not in all countries), then by "had a joint or 2" you mean "committing a crime". Again, only the guilty need fear this change.
