JR and Jason went over to Target today at lunch to check up on rumors that the retailer was breaking Nintendo's street date for the DS Lite, and selling them today.

Turns out the rumors were true.

I'm looking at one right now. On its screen - instead of New Super Mario, instead of Zelda, instead of Brain Age - is a hand-drawn reproduction of perhaps the most vile pornographic image to ever appear on the internet: goatse. It would seem that our intrepid early-adopters are more interested in being vile with the thing than with actually playing it. Which, I suppose, is as it should be.

Yes Virginia, there is a Santa Claus, and he's sitting in a corner, weeping.

**UPDATE: They were sold out when I went after work.

Hey, neither of us had any DS games at the office, and we had to try the new system out somehow. This, inevitably, led to Picto-Chat. Picto-Chat degenerates rapidly [http://ds.joystiq.com/2006/05/12/waiting-for-wii-bring-your-ds/].

Back to the point, the improvements are quite significant - the larger stylus is great for my ginormous hands, and the upgraded screens are absolutely gorgeous. Although the plan was to keep this one for myself and officially pass down the 'classic' DS to the girlfriend (so I could actually play), she has been not-so-secretly coveting the DS Lite and I'm suspecting it might end up missing unless I get her one too.
